But many pilots accept it because they are intimidated and everyone is worried about disciplinary action right now. The stories of what is going on right now are rediculous.. morale is at an all time low right now.

You're giving PDT management too much credit. They have never been proactive, they are always behind the ball and reactive. They never think about tomorrow, they are only ever focused on today, zero foresight or planning.
As I said before, they are fat, dumb and happy in their management positions. It is no concern to them as long as the operation runs today. Stretch the current pilots to the max by extending them, jr man them, have reserve pilots and FAs operate full trips since there are pretty much no rules or limitations on what they can use reserve pilots and FAs for.
But yes, I think they are in for a rude awakening as hiring picks up and the industry heals, and we get back to where things were before covid.

I agree, but I don't think it's because they're too dumb to see what's going on. Rather, I think most leadership positions here just don't have any authority to do anything about it. The 'directors' and 'VP's' behave more like administrative place holders, not leaders. The only time things really change is when daddy AA says so.

Answer those questions, and you’ll see that the way they run your company is not a mistake.

Does Piedmont ever cancel flights due to staffing? How willing is the pilot group to cover open flying in exchange for premium? Is it cheaper to hire more pilots, or to pay premium to existing pilots?

It's not some great mystery. Everyone knows what is going on. The fact is that it "works". They make the shoe fit so to speak. It does not matter that it makes everyone's life terrible, the simple fact is that the operation still runs regardless of how it is being run. You've nailed it btw. People pick up premium on their days off, and the company is able to bend and stretch the rules to cover the flying with the crews it has.
Nothing will ever improve or change as long as it continues to function. There is no problem if there is no "problem".

Is there something wrong with premium pay all of a sudden?
One year ago the world was coming to an end and we were going out of business.
It’s true the schedules suck. But are we mad premium pay is back and people are picking it up?
