Here is the March snapshot. Congrats to our 6 month seniority captain who has been in training for 1/2 year.

Stratapilot 02-22-2018 06:39 PM

If I’m reading this correctly, 11 new hires bailed or failed?

Plus one at less than a year. IOE?

MaCrOs 02-23-2018 02:59 AM

It could be several things. Some new hires do wash out. Some decide this is not a good fit. Some are here to get some studying in CRJ while they wait some other regional class dates. Some are here just to get some recency so they can go to other carriers...

AirlineMerc 02-23-2018 07:36 AM

There were 5 in my class of 27 that failed to complete training for various reasons. And, my class was told to expect probably around 15% attrition. So 11 in a month out of 60ish New Hores sounds about right.

Edit: I was going to fix my typo, but it made me laugh, so I elected to leave it in.

Tiger52 02-23-2018 08:26 AM

Hores, Hos, Hires... Whateves. LOL. My class was apparently a terrible class. Started with 28. Best I can tell 17 made it past IOE....

blackhawk88 02-23-2018 12:22 PM

Some new hires also come here for a few months and move on to a major/legacy if they have a good military background.

Thanks MaCrOS for sharing, this is great!! Iz there a specific place you go for this or made by someone you know?

StickPig 02-25-2018 06:43 AM

Looks like PHL went really junior for FO’s. Any opinion on an expectation to stay that way?

Really junior people had good reason to take a risk. Senior people (barring unusual things like living in Philly) had a lot more downside diving into a pool of unknown depth. Give it a few months and it will go senior if it's desirable flying.

Care to share why people are washing out? I'm just trying to avoid making similar mistakes and hoping to hear some best practices.

It would be awful to plan for this career change and then wash out early on.

One of the biggest things is a lot of people come in with the idea that the regionals need everyone they can get with the pilot shortage. Cooperate, graduate, and give it your best effort. Putting in the effort and the instructors will help you if you fall behind, but if you don’t they won’t.

flybywp 02-25-2018 08:37 PM

I'm betting this has been asked already but couldn't find it... Any word on if any bases will be closing in the future? Especially with more expected to come, 7 bases seems like a lot.

CLT and TYS will close to open CAK, CLE, and TOL. Then PSA’s master plan of having strategic assets all over the Ohio valley will be complete.

It's all information extracted from FLICA seniority and awards lists with some light programming...

Nice try...But CLE and TOL are not in the Ohio Valley.

I actually agree that re-opening CAK makes strategic sense though, because it will forever be a MX base and there are no good regionals to work for in the PIT-CLE-CMH triangle that CAK sits in the middle of...

Republic is in PIT.

Don’t you dare...

PSA needs a base in Florida.

I can think of a few people that would LOVE CAK, like everyone who lives in PIT. And there are some senior people there.....

That said, it's probably not lost on you that there are regional flights to three of our hubs from JAX. Maybe you should start that rumor....

StickPig 02-28-2018 01:02 PM

Bases in DCA generally commutable? Looking to get out of CLT for a bit and I'd be around #12-15 FO I base....Commuting from RDU.

Probably. You’ve got the travel planner, so check outhouse many flights there are and loads.

IF they opened a DAB base they would never have a problem recruiting again

Hate to break it to you, but a DAB base will probably never happen, unless they started direct PSA flights to DCA and PHL out of there.

Basically, it makes no sense to open an outstation base that only has flights to one hub.

Sorry to burst the bubble of all the Riddle Rats out there....

JAX or SAV however...

Keep getting down on your knees and pray to the Gods of PSA or Lords of Kobol or whatever diety you subscribe to that you get your wish.......

After these last base openings, I rebuilt my spreadsheets to accomodate 12 bases. Because it's PSA and you never know.....

Couldn't care less either way.

Last I knew however there were 32 schools in the Daytona area. ATP and Phoenix East were pretty large schools also though its been several years since I've been that way.

Anyhow, the point was solely from a recruitment point of view not of a practicality one, though I thought that was pretty obvious.

Was that 7 washouts in one month!?! Is that normal?

Reserve time seems to be creeping up in CVG. Do you think it will go down once the new bases open?

I just finished up in CLT and the word was the mid DEC class had a higher than usual coincidence with training challenges. Not calling that fact, I just know what I was told. On the other hand, with the 4 week delay between systems and IPT observation maybe some folks decided to find another home instead of paid vacation to build seniority.

It's not necessarily in one month. Training is all the way through the end of IOE so roughly 3 months.

Chunk 03-26-2018 08:40 AM

I saw ‘7’ on the April spreadsheet under the “training attrites” column and assume they were all in April.

Did you say there’s currently a 4 week break between systems and IPT?? Is that expected to continue? How about for sims?

I’m starting in april and am trying to plan some important family events that can’t be rescheduled. I know as a guy in training I have not much by the way of options, but a well timed delay in training might help.

TIA

H60 DUSTOFF 03-26-2018 09:31 AM

In the latest class, 1/3 will go directly into IPTs, 1/3 will observe the IPT sessions for 2 weeeks, and 1/3 will go home for 2 weeks, then come back to Dayton to observe for 2 weeks before finally starting the IPTs.

This could be different for the next classes, depending on how they are split up for initial aircraft training (200 vs 701/900).
