So I know this may be a little off topic for the discussion about PHL, but it does involve a decision between PSA and Republic.
I've posted similar things here before, but have an opportunity that I need to put serious thought into, and need opinions.
I am a 500TT CFI and 19 years old, living in the Greensboro, NC area. I have been in the Pilot Prep Program since Sep. 2018 and really (really) like Republic...
I recently had an opportunity to interview with PSA for their cadet program as the flight school I work at is a partner. I'm headed up to DAY in a couple weeks to complete my final interview for their Senior Level. PSA just announced their $7,500 bonus to cadets (and if you don't take it now, you just don't get it-- this is completely separate from the sign-on bonus.) So my question is, should I commit right now (being 1.5-2yrs out) for the $7,500? Or, stay in both programs, but eat the $7,500 and see how things look next year around this time?
I feel like it's too early for me to commit, and I really am not sure which of the two I'd go work for. CLT is only an hour away, so living in base with PSA would be a lot easier and makes mores since in terms of that, where as with RPA I would likely re-locate to an outstation base or commute. However, I haven't really heard much negative out of RPA pilots and hear very good things about their contract/QOL.
Thanks for the help!!!

That’s a tough decision. A few months ago I’d say Republic hands down. PSA has recently closed the gap. If you don’t want to move then I’d go with PSA. If you’re willing to move I’d say Republic is still the better option.
Don’t worry about that 7,500. After taxes that’s 4,000-4,500. Most likely the regional environment will be vastly different 1.5 years from now, but even if things stay the same... in your first year you will easily make up that $7,500 difference at Republic. There’s more to your salary than just hourly rates. 2nd year you will easily make 10k-20k more at Republic. Once you upgrade you can double that... at a minimum.
I’d be cautious about going to a non wholly owned going forward, but I’d say Republic has the most promising future of all the non wholly owned contract carriers.
If you don’t want to move and/or don’t have a degree... come to PSA.

In the end, whether it’s now or 2 years from now, I think the difference between PSA and Republic will be negligible and you can’t go wrong either way.

At this point in time I would lean towards PSA once you’re senior and a line holder. While on reserve and junior I’d go with Republic. Once you’re a line holder I’d say our QOL is worth the pay loss compared to Republic. With that said though, reserve times at PSA will likely be close to 1.5 years or longer for a new hire starting today and when you do finally become a line holder... SAP (imo) will not be as desirable as it is today because we will likely have PBS that will come with restrictions on SAP. Although, we will probably have improvements in other areas. This could happen next week or next year. Who knows?
