I don’t think this is true. At least not to the degree your post would infer. I’ve called in sick on Christmas Eve. I never heard peep.
If you have an attendance problem already (History of UTCs, no shows, and a bunch of sick calls >4/Year) then you might want to avoid banging out on a major holiday.

The previous CPP was specifically updated just prior to when I was hired to state that a sick call over a company holiday would disqualify you. I am being a bit sarcastic because the new Aviate doesn’t specifically address the situation, however you are required to pass a subjective ‘final review’ prior to getting the nod to United.

Negative to both. That said, I thought the HR went well, I blew the tech out of the water. Only unknowns are the Hogan and the lack of degree. They asked about why I had no degree, had what I thought was a good answer, and they knew I was in school currently working on it and about 10 classes from being done.
