When I worked at the hotel - my van driving was the only one of two (bellhops) positions that paid a lower waged based on the expectation of the tips (well maybe the hotel bar tender - but I didn't party in there!) I've heard of people saying they tips the maids. Nice gesture - but they much more than I did in hourly wage. Bucking convention shows something of character. Cutting in line is bucking convention too and I think it also shows something of character.

That is all correct. The idea that tipping is the expectation is bad, but that is the way our society is set up. Until we can get 330 million people to change their behavior and adjust pay and prices overnight, tipping is the easier.

For all those cheap pilots who complain about tipping... just pretend you are paid 80 cents an hour less and the food at the restaurant costs 20% more. That is what would happen if we could got rid of tipping. You wouldn't be making more... things would just cost more.

And how long ago was that? What market was it?

Some hotels assume van drivers get tips and pay them less, but not all do. In my experience (9 years old now) less busy hotels don't necessarily have dedicated van drivers. These employees make a normal wage. Sometimes they are behind the desk, and sometimes the drive the van. In those cases, tips ARE extra.

As a pilot all that isn't worth the time thinking about. Just give them $2 and worry about something more important.

Well documented in this thread and other my time as a van driver - but in this case I'll repeat - along time ago.
All of the hotels that the airlines stayed at in the OKC area had dedicated van drivers. I was downtown at the Sheraton.

Give them their $2
LOVE IT! I only got $1 per pilot.
Love that inflation raise.

The pilot in me wants to give $1.50, but I hate change. It is easier to go to the bank every few months and get a couple hundred in $2 bills.

I don't know what to do in 2025. Will the Treasury make $3 or $4 bills by then because even if I'm a wide body captain, $5 will be a lot!

I’m right there with you, if someone is getting paid a tip wage then I tip them. If someone is receiving a non-tip wave but if not tipping them will ruffle the feathers of those I’m with, I tip them. As far as bucking convention goes, it can show good character or bad character, which to me makes it a relatively unuseful metric for character. “Innovator” and “iconoclast” both describe someone who bucks convention, the only difference is the observer’s opinion of whether that particular convention deserves bucking. Convention is nothing more than the base rate, it is an amoral reference point.

I find it odd this thread keeps popping up. Is two buck per overnight really worth this much fuss?

Don't even get out of the car to help with bags (unless they're older).
With this whole COVID thing most don’t get out of the van to scratch up your luggage anymore.

Yeah I would say the "majority" of the regional overnights are being driven by front desk employees, facility employees or some similar position, paid at a much higher rate than a typical van driver, who's only job was to drive, would get.

I will add fuel to the fire, should we even be touching cash at this point due to the whole Covid thing? I know it doesnt last on surfaces very long, but if you have it and just wiped your lips or something, than proceeded to touch the bill and hand it off, I mean ya know. lol

I’m not withdrawing any cash right now or using cash at all because of COVID, so unless they have a Venmo I’m not tipping.
