$46.80/24 hr period if you want to be precise. Meaning you can afford your two QPC meals a day or whatever, $2 in van tips a day, and still come out ahead. Dude moves your bag = be a professional and tip.

I think it's probably a lot easier to break down your income into budgeting categories when you're making a little more. When you're taking home less than 30k, it doesn't really matter what the money is called. Per diem, income, whatever. It's all critical. Every dollar is a dollar closer to your rent payment.

My old boss in a previous career had a "car and driver" category on his paystub...this guy made maybe 8 million / year, and had a "car and driver" type of per diem worth $14k. Made absolutely no sense.

The greater point being - doesn't matter how the company breaks it down. It's all money that you decide how to spend.

Did you not google the regional pay scales before you took the job?

To be fair, google all you want, but nothing says in addition to making crap pay at xyz regional, you should give some of your hard earned money as a tip. That’s not something most people learn until IOE.

You'd never traveled before you learned to fly? I distinctly remember tipping bell hops and van drivers for handling my bags when I was a (non-pilot) business traveler, and a recreational traveler.

Some service people just get tips in our society, I don't know why people think there's a special carve-out for pilots to not tip van drivers??? It's not strictly mandatory, but people will notice and it will reflect on you.

You are literally trying to teach people things their parents should have taught them 20 years ago. I mean, seriously..the guy was complaining that his value meal is $15 and there is nothing left for a tip or to eat. SO many ridiculous things about that excuse.

Yikes this got ugly in a hurry. Who makes $30,000 or less a year right now? Republic junior FO’s who took a pay cut to avoid furlough? They don’t have to worry about tipping van drivers anyways, they’re not working more than what 2 trips a month? so what is that around $6 in van ride tips a month? Give me a break.

If the van driver doesn’t want to play the part, then don’t tip them. If he/she plays the part, give them a dollar and say “thank you”, not hard, show some respect.

I’ve flown with pilots who don’t tip during the whole 3-4 day trip, but can’t wait to run over to the nearest airport McDonald’s and buy their $12 happy meals during sits. I have my doubts that “saving money” has anything to do with it.

I never thought about tipping van drivers before. But now that I'm wearing this uniform, I feel like I'm supposed to pretend that I am prestigious and can afford to be generous.
