If you’re at a major, you should be tipping $3-$5.

We make more in a month than RJ FO’s do in a year. Some probably make less than the van drivers. Accosting them for not tipping is absurd.

I’d be surprised if any RJ FO is making less than the van driver working part-time at the Holiday Inn. Also, it doesn’t matter if I was a CA at a major or regional FO, I worked hard for every dollar I earn. I don’t want to give away $1 dollar of the money I worked so hard to earn. Sorry but those relying on my tip will have to get it elsewhere or fend for themselves.

I love the guys that start talking pay rates and contract negotiations in the van and how much they want then pull out a single dollar with the flair of a circus magician.

Like the old men at a poker table who come with a roll of fifty cent pieces because they are too cheap to toss the dealer a white chip when they rake a two hundred dollar pot.

I did switch to two buck when I got to the majors, that might about match inflation from when I started.

If you find not tipping a van driver “distasteful” and “poor behavior,” you need to have some perspective.

How someone decides to spend their money is their issue. I’d hate to fly with someone who’s main concern and how they feel about themselves, are on how others tip. I would hope that when we arrive at the hotel, we have other, more important things to be concerned with (FaceTiming with family, eating, socializing with the crew, exercising, sleep, etc.)

With all the truly awful things happening around the world, especially the animosity between other human beings, I would think whether or not to tip a van driver would be pretty petty. The Western culture of over-tipping propagates threads like these with divisiveness.

I have plenty of perspective. That's why it rubs me the wrong way.

If there's too much tipping for your taste here in the US, you can of course go elsewhere.

It's very very far from my main concern, but it gets noticed.

That’s my point, find something worth fighting for that rubs you the wrong way.

It’s not about running away from the issue, it’s about not perpetuating it. This same tipping logic would eventually mean that every service personnel should be tipped, whether or not the service is done, i.e. read how tipping started here in America.
