I think I'm starting to hate this thread more than people that are too cheap to tip.

The crazy thing is a thread with the same subject rears its ugly head every now and again!

The best aviation job I ever had was one where you had to spend your per diem or you didn't get to keep it. Tip the van driver, order a nice meal at dinner, etc... It kept the cheap pilots from being cheap in order to save a few bucks.

I would love for my airline to go to use it or lose it per diem.

They'd probably keep the dollar bill and then claim on the expense report that they gave it to the driver.

This has got to be the biggest BS I have had the displeasure of reading. In my view, per diem is compensation. I don't care if it's tax-free or not; it's on my check and deposited to ME.

I don't tell you have to spend your money. I don't think the company cares how I think they should spend theirs either. God forbid someone wants to save money by holding onto what they have, but instead you call them cheap. GMAB

per diem is not compensation. If you are treating it as such may I suggest consulting a financial consultant because obviously you finances are not in order.

How is my financial well-being related to how I view per diem? Explain that one to me. Do you really think I'm spending ALL my per diem on a trip? I pack enough food to last 3-4 days.

Sounds like more money available to tip your van driver. Good deal

This is the same thinking that has pilots showing up in ratty old shirts despite getting a uniform allowance.

and/or why most companies now require you to get reimbursed instead of just giving you the cash. They know pilots will waste it on other stuff and show up to work with pit stained shirts and threadbare pants and ties.
