Yes, you can make a whole lot of your own luck.

You can even avoid a lot of the bad luck by thinking ahead, but of course not all of it.

My grandfather was one of the earliest naval aviators, so he had a front-row seat to many of the rules written in blood. When I started down the aviation road he told me "Never take an airplane anywhere your mind didn't go five minutes ago".

Same applies to life in general in my experience (you usually need more time than five minutes though).
