I am very sorry that your friend was in that accident. It is times like these where nothing anyone says will make you feel better. I am sure your friend loved flying and at least he was doing something he loved. It is a tragedy none the less that he was killed, but it is something we all take a chance on and I am sure he would have rather been doing something he loved then not.

Are we still supposed to refuse readys on long call?

Only if they tag you with one after a trip... at least that's what I heard from the union. There is an understanding now that you can be assigned a ready as long as you know about it in advance.

Just heard today that there is something in the works between the company and ALPA to re-word the contract a bit to make it less confusing when it comes to the ready reserve long call deal. Its not that the contract directly prohibits a long call from sitting a ready. The ready reserve section of the contract was just not reworded to accomodate the changes with the long call windows when LC was created.

I believe it is approved throught the Chief pilots office. You are not paid for a personal day. Not sure how many you need, but it is generally not something you just go out on. If you will need an extended period of time off for medical reasons you will use sick/FMLA/Medical leave depending on your situation. An extended period of time off can be approved, however I have heard of very few people getting approved for it.

I had a buddy that walked into the CP office and asked to drop the last 4 legs (over 2 days) of a trip because he wanted to go on vacation early. (used those exact words to the chief when asked why). Comair had the staffing, so he let him do it no problem. And no, there is no friendship between buddy and chief pilot

You can get PL through the CP's office, and you can use Vacation Pay for your absent days. It will show up as VP (Vacation Payout) on SBS. If you request PL prior to bid close, they'll apply a virtual credit of 2.73 hrs./per day.
