Let's hope this is a false rumor. However, airlines do tend to hire 'til they furlough. It never ends.

I'm pretty sure if a package was to be offered they would offer it with date in the future so they could see how many would take it and THEN hire based off of that information.

But no one ever said airlines were smart.

I was talking with a very senior captain last week and he told me he would take a buyout if they offered to buy him out for half of what he would be making until he retired (he threw out the figure of $700,000), plus one year of medical and lifetime non rev passes. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Just as a reference, when Comair last furloughed, there was a 4 month gap between date of hire and date of furlough. Also, it costs money to furlough so I am sure the bean counters are watching this closely so as to not hire more than needed.

The furlough word gets tossed out very liberally around here and I am not sure why.

Probably because airlines furlough rather liberally.

OK. I'll bite. Were you here during our furlough a few years ago? As you may or may not recall (depending on if you were here or not or if you have the early stages of alzheimers) when Comair furloughed, we were so short staffed. Reserves were being constantly timed out and line holders being junior manned. Instead of furloughing only what they needed to, they went above and beyond what was required. They were as liberal as Dennis Kucinich.
