Any sort of aircraft emergency near the runway would close the runway. The tower doesn't know if they are going to blow the doors...panicked pax running onto the active and getting sucked into other airplanes engines is no bueno.

Sounds like they went off the edge of the HS, and maybe were still in the safety area.

I have no idea what the conditions were, but decent braking in the center of a contaminated runway can become poor braking as you get near the edges. If it's a contaminated runway, slow to a crawl before you test your cornering ability...

Trend? Seriously...are you retarded? I mean, if so it's cool; I'm impressed you can hold a medical. We were all thinkin' about pitching in and sending you to Disney World for vacation.

FWIW, the plane is fine and is back in service. No injuries. No idea whats gonna happen to the crew. I've flown with the CA and he's as good a pilot as any if not better. Conflicting reports on the "why" they went 4 wheelin'....i'm sure it'll all get covered here though.

One thing is for sure and not a conflict the Runway didnt move the High Speed Didnt Move, ever wonder why your Flight Instructor beat up Stay on the Center Line, Follow the Lines, Slow down when going around corners, Yea I know Basic stuff I dont care if you are 121 sometimes WE forget the Basics

Anyone know exactly what happened? Its really too bad, and sounds like it created quite a mess for tower and approach who had to switch from the 31s to 22s on the spot..... Gotta love NY

I highly doubt that though I imagine there would be some kind of diciplinary action. Without any damage to the aircraft the crew may even avoid anything going on their record.

Well, I just landed on 31L and you can see the ruts where they went off. Not sure why the went off where they did but it is between the high speed and the reverse high speed. Almost exactly midway between the two. My guess is they were thinking of doing the high speed when ATC started yelling at them to take the next turn off, which was the reverse, and they tried but then changed their minds and ended up going into the grass along the runway. It looks like they went off at almost a 90 degree angle to the runway so probably indecision aggravated by the tower yelling at them to hurry up.

Have to disagree with ya blkflyer...... if you look at even just the weather conditions....these are not similiar instances other than two aircraft went ended up off the paved surface. Lets let things sort themselves out and then we will have a better idea what happened.
