Quote: The amount of flight training at my small airport has gone up dramatically due to COVID. Most of the people have other careers and are just learning to fly for fun. They can’t travel, go to bars, movies, etc.. Learning to fly is a way to get out of the house and to learn a new skill. A couple airline guys that took leave are now doing it full time. A few others are doing as much as they want part time.

I’ll hit 1500 next month, hopefully get my ATP in spring, and will hope things recover around the time my daughter can drive. My wife gets her vaccine on Monday since she works at the hospital, so things should start moving soon once that gets widespread. I predict a repeat of the 1918 flu turning into the roaring 20’s.
Hopefully not an exact repeat. It didn’t really end well.

No kidding...

Great Depression
Nations polarized between Facism and Communism

Uhh, historically speaking, that period was scarcely unique:

I would argue that only the civil war had a greater impact on prosperity. I'm not even sure about that.

I’m pushing 2,000TT as a CFI now. I’ll be a 2 year in March. It’s very disheartening applying for entry level SIC jobs. Merry Christmas.

There’s pilots with 2000hrs turbine time doing same. In eight to ten years it will happen again. Just like 2001. 2008. Now.

Great job. ********* industry. You’ll be ok. Merry Christmas.

There are many with 10,000 hours jet time doing the same after their regional shut down. Entry level jobs are extremely competitive again. Things will eventually get back to where 2,000 hours piston is extremely marketable and last until the next inevitable kick in the nads.

I love it how some here say it happens every 8 to 10 years. From 2001 to 2008 is 7 years. From 2008 to 2020 is 12 years. Let’s see, 2001 minus 10 years is 1991. Don’t recall, what happened then? 1991 minus 10 years would be 1981. What happened then? Refresh my memory.

2001 was the twin towers being destroyed, many people did not fly. 2008 was the mortgage bubble (lying about income to get mortgages with no proof of income) and Mark to market causing a recession. Also the flying mandatory retirement went up from 60 to 65. The major airlines had a major consolidation that contributed to the lost decade. Don’t see those two things happening again. 2020 was the worst plague in a century, except for the Asian flu in 1958 and the Hong Kong flu in 1968. I forget, did we have across the board pilot furloughs in those years?

Of course there will be black swan events in the future, but I reject the idea they occur every 8 to 10 years, as though they are related.

Agreed. It will be a few years. But as flying recovers, post vaccine rollout and the inevitable retirement age occurs, those who with 10,000 will be back, and a 2,000 hour again will be the coin of the realm.
