[QUOTE=Pantera;372605]We should not bash Mesa but we should be bashing the FAA for dropping the ball on this. Yes it is the FAA's fault. The NTSB has recommended many times to the FAA that a change in rest rules is due. It is on their top list of safety improvements for the airlines. [QUOTE]
Yes we can blame Mesa! Many companies have work rules that support rest greater than the FAA minimum. While I think the FAA should step up and make rest requirements longer etc... the Mesa pilots were operating within THEIR contract......a reacurring theme with them huh. If you fall asleep and overshoot your destination I would say that is grounds for termination, thats absolutely inexcusable. Call in sick, fatigued, but don't put safety up to risk like that. But again if you do that at Mesa (call in sick or fatigued) they youd probably get fired anyway, so I really fail to see how this is a truly FAA problem.

I wonder how much more it's going to take? The tragic Comair accident, the Go! incident. When is the FAA going to listen to the NTSB and fix this?
And where is ALPA on this one? I know they've done a little to highlight fatigue, but not nearly enough in my opinion.

I'm sure that ALPA representatives for Go/Mesa are working on this case. Typically, due to privacy concerns, not to mention other legal concerns, they aren't exactly going to jump onto the anonymous webboards and trumpet their case.

Hate to point this out, but so far nobody has shown that fatigue was or should have been a factor in either of these incidents. Both crews had reasonable or better rest opportunities.
I've seen plenty of circumstances where fatigue reduced safety margins, but I don't think those two qualify.

Is it true that one of the crewmembers deadheaded from the midwest to Hawaii just before the pairing?
You could get legal rest in HNL and still have problems with fatigue if there was a five hour time zone change.

But the Go! operation did not go junior when I was there...most likely anyone commuting there would be doing so voluntarily. A midwesterner who could hold HI, could also hold ORD or IAD....

In my book rest does not equal sleep. 8 hours of rest means 4-6 hours sleep. I have really wanted to fall asleep once and I have had several captains fall asleep. Meanwhile behind the door the public is unsuspecting and thinking we are bright eyed and bushy tailed and making 250K a year with 20 days off a month.
