It is fairly easy to get burned out on this CFI thing. Especially when some guys are complaining about only getting 8 days off a month. And as a CFI, I'd love to know what having 8 days off a month feels like. We get about 2-3 days off a month if we're lucky. Don't even start me on the amount you get paid for the full week of work. Mesa is also something a lot of us are considering because there is no light at the end of the tunnel anywhere else. Being in a pool at Eagle, or Comair your options are limited with everyone elses furloughing or announced furloughing intentions.
Many of you think that being a "CFI" is the honorable thing to do but, being honorable doesn't always pay the bills. Ask the AMFA mechanics at NWA, how striking for unfair wages worked out for them in 2004. In the end this industry is what it is. And you will be used by your company, so if a company offers you a way to progress through your career, take it. No one has SJS here. At some point another 100 hours of dual given SEL means nothing on your resume. Turbine time is more valuable then anything you can do in a Da-20 or C172, and it it would help all of those teaching steep turns and stall progress in the careers.

Wow... how dare you not tow the whiny, disgruntled pilot line and be miserable. And to not want to spread misery? Unthinkable!
Life is what you make of it. It's good to see a pilot having a positive attitude. If only there were more of it here, this would be a web site worth visiting more often.

Guys, we have folks looking at coming back to Mesa for the second time after being furloughed from United for the second time in 9yrs. It's a nasty industry, you go where you need to in order to feed your family and pay your bills w/ your skill...granted, you don't make much here @ Mesa your first couple years, but I'm not gonna bad mouth United pilots for doing what they need to do. Get into the industry while you can because many of these opportunities are going to evaporate here pretty quick and might not come back around for quite awhile.
Mesa and the Dash 8 have treated me well over the last 5 yrs. I can't speak for the rest of the company, but there are pilots who are happy and content right now @ MAG, as hard as that may be to believe.
Good luck to all aspiring pilots right now trying to break into this industry.

It's sink or swim time for a lot of you guys waiting to get into this industry. I know the comments here can sometimes be a bit negative towards Mesa...Polish Pilot, as long as you are aware of some of the challenges here at MAG, you'll be fine. It's a risky profession, as you've stated, there really isn't much else at this time. So it's human nature to get moving take what you can. It could be awhile before you get the opportunity again. My 5 years at Mesa have been good to me, I've learned a lot flying with 10,000 to 20,000 hr. captains, as well as 300 hr. F/Os. Many opportunities have been afforded to me that I might not have had at other carriers. Last but not least, I work for myself and my family, not my CEO. Do your research, know what you're potentially getting yourself into, and don't have any regrets.

I gotta know man, what kind of opportunities? The opportunity for free airport camping trips in a flying RV? The opportunity to explain to your friends, family and significant other why you have to cancel your vacation? The opportunity to know what it feels like to sit in a 3 hour taxi line up at the hub and know that you quit getting paid for your turn an hour ago? I just gotta know, what doors are being blown wide open by a career at Mesa?
I'm not blind...it's an extremely cruddy industry right now, but I'm not gonna let that get to me. I've had a pretty good run at Mesa so far and I thought it important to share that w/ the readers here so they get a complete picture.

I can't begin to tell you the number of people I've known here over the last several years who have moved on, like so many of us desire, to Southwest, Continental, Cathay Pacific, Delta, Northwest, FedEx, UPS...the list goes on. The one thing I can say about them is they took advantage of good opportunities to become a sim instructor, check airman, or volunteered for the Union and learned a lot from having a leadership position. They didn't whine, they knew who they worked for, they made the most of the situation and took advantage of the opportunites afforded them. What is so difficult to understand about that? You can spend your whole day focusing on the negatives about this industry...or you can cowboy up, be gracious, make the most of what has been given to us. You never know when you'll have these sort of opportunites again.

) I'm with XJT and there was a while where everyone I flew with was in the pool at SWA or had a class date at CAL, NWA or DAL. I've even flown with a few that were on their way to UPS and FedEx or overseas. So again, same opportunities. Nothing hard to understand about that. But lets call a spade a spade: Mesa is a disgrace to airline pilots everywhere. But I do agree with you, this job is what you make of it and I've been fortunate with where I ended up (at least so far, knock on wood). But I know that for me personally, I can only have my face shoved in the mud so many times before I start to get a little ticked off about it. If you're happy at Mesa, thats great. I know I wouldn't be.In an attempt to get back to the topic at hand, what's up with that "Mesa in China" deal? If one were to get hired by Mesa, is there a chance that you could be "Shanghai'd" (literally) and shipped off to China?

The overnight airport camping trips are a thing of the past. If a layover is 4 hours or more, each crewmember gets a hotel room.
The Dash 8 folks have not been faced with vacation cancellations recently, as far as I know. On the CRJ side, vacations have been cancelled for over a year. There is no denying it, that's terrible. With the sad changes in the industry, it will probably be easier for MAG to find pilots and reach a more satisfactory staffing level.

No one is applying to go jets. Don't call me out for not supporting orgainzed labor. I was wearing "1985 IAM stike T-shirts" when I was in pre-school. The fact is treat a Regional what it is, they all suck and its a stepping stone to something else. Don't ever call anyone a scab because the timing has changed and now 1000 hours cannot get you to a so called "top tier" regional. No picket lines have been crossed, so no "Scab" work has been performed, by ANYONE at Mesa. End rant.
