ATP thoughts
#21
I did my multi there a while back. It gets the job done. Not particularly good training, but not bad - just functional. Those Travelairs are like death warmed over. I flew 2 of the 3 during my training and both felt like miracles every time they actually took off. But, I do believe they are safe. But they leak oil, look like hell, interiors are ragged out, brakes feel strange, mags don't clear very well, etc. I can't imagine how many hours those things have.
Anyway, don't let these comments scare you away. If I could do it over again, I'd do the same thing. It worked. I learned what I needed to know, the airplanes performed when I needed them to, and I paid a mere fraction of what others paid.
But, if you are used to 2000+ model year airplanes at the big part 141 school, you'll be in for a surprise.
Good luck.

I had a Southwest guy in the jump seat last week that said there are places around Dallas that do a 737 type for around $2600-$3500. Might as well go that route and get a type, your ATP, and save some money at the same time.

I've trained more than my fair share of ATP-Certificates while working for ATP...I can tell you that their course is awful, but the instructors know the ride, and probably more importantly, know the examiners...

My other instructor wasnt good at all and I was disappointed overall.

Gap=No longer receiving pay checks. If you aren't actively flying for a 121, 125, or 135 carrier then it's considered a gap. A furlough is a gap. If you're furloughed with an expired written then you have to take the written again since you aren't actively practicing the material covered. He's furloughed and wants to get his ATP. It will require a new ATP written. If he gets hired by a regional tomorrow then he can go do his checkride. Since he's not employed he's currently in a gap.
