Wednesday, January 21, 2009 Special Eaglewire - January 21, 2009 SPECIAL EAGLEWIRE FOR JANUARY 21, 2009
Published Especially for the Employees of American Eagle

* * * * PLEASE POST ON ALL BULLETIN BOARDS * * * *

January 21, 2009

Eagle and Executive Employees,

Today AMR reported a net loss of $340 million for the fourth quarter of 2008. This compares to a net loss of $69 million for the fourth quarter of 2007, and is largely driven by the weakened economy and a dramatic drop in consumer demand for air travel. For all of 2008, AMR posted a net loss of $2.1 billion, down significantly from a net profit of $504 million in 2007, as the company paid $2.7 billion more for fuel last year than it would have paid at 2007 prices. For a more detailed discussion of the results and a letter from AMR Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey, log on to Jetnet.

The story of 2008 can be told in two dramatically different chapters. During the first four months of the year we were preparing for a divestiture from AMR and hiring in order to fly our full schedule. However, as fuel prices soared, we were forced to scale back our schedule, put the divestiture on hold and ground planes in the second and third quarters.

The fourth quarter saw Eagle finish the grounding of the SAABs and many of our 37-seat ERJs, transition 12 ATR-72s to Dallas, continue the growth of our ground handling business for other airlines and commence another season of winter operations.

From a financial perspective, the fourth quarter offered both good and bad news. The good news was the dramatic fall in the cost of fuel as the quarter progressed. Cheaper fuel resulted in lower "onboard" losses on the flying which Eagle performs for our partner American, making the revenue Eagle's customers bring to American all the more attractive.

The bad news is that because we performed less flying, we generated less revenue under the "capacity purchase" agreement between American and Eagle. Because we generated less revenue and were not able to reduce costs as quickly, we fell short of our profit plan. Eagle posted a loss of -1.5% on the capacity purchase payments American made to Eagle for flying and ground handling during the quarter. Operating statistics for the fourth quarter and the full year of 2008 are summarized below.

In 2008, we ran a more on-time airline, improved customer satisfaction scores, reduced customer complaints, reduced lost bags and reduced aircraft damages. We carried more than 19 million customers, reached a negotiated labor agreement with our pilots and paid nearly $5.9 million in employees bonuses ($475 per eligible employee) for meeting our goals under the Performance Bonus Plan.

The new year will bring a host of challenges and opportunities. As the U.S. and global economies shrink, unemployment rises and consumer confidence falls, airlines of all types will be tested. Our priority must remain to fly safely and reliably, provide friendly, professional service to every customer and operate as efficiently as possible. The Plan to Win is still Eagle's roadmap for success. We must continually strive to Retain AA as a Customer, Position Eagle for Growth when market conditions improve and ensure we Align Employee Interests with those of the company, so we are all working toward a common goal.

Thanks for all that you do, and please continue to work safely.

Sincerely,

Peter M. Bowler
President and CEO
American Eagle Airlines

what annoys me is that while we the pilots try our best to be on time, generally friendly and always safe the other 95% of the airline does not give a **** about getting the job done.

i'm not saying that the pax deserve to be treated like angels however the gate agents are nasty and don't work well with anyone, not the flight crews, not the airport employees and definitely not the pax.

the rampers could care less. of course they probably don't get paid enough to care. however more often than not a flight will go off late because no one can get the lav service done, no one will get in the damn fuel truck, no one will come out and marshal etc etc...we've all been there...i sure as hell hate doing a reduced rest overnight all too take the 0530 van to the airport, get *****ed at by the agents b/c we are running late, still have the plane ready 5 min before the scheduled departure time and still run 1.5 hours late because no one else can get it together.

unfortunately it doesn't seem to be hitting home to a lot of people at AA or AE. when the gate agents and rampers start getting laid off maybe they'll perk up but until then they apparently have no vested interest in the well being of the company.

i am by no means peter bowler's right hand man or a favorite of the chief pilots. i am also certain i am not the "airline pilot" material of past generations and i do apologize for my short comings. however, i do still show up on time, look halfway decent, put a smile on even after all the crap and always try to do things safe and hopefully efficiently.

i really hope that the company can somehow pull it together this year and stop blaming the damn economy. at some point we have to take accountability, something that no one in the airline industry seems to excel at. i understand the odds we run against however the "i don't care attitude" needs to stop.

one last note...it's funny that all these employees, and i am guilty of it too sometimes, say they hate their job and the company and don't care what happens. when we all lose our jobs we'll all be singing a different tune.

Yeah, that's the feeling I'm getting as well. Unless they want to offer a ton of zero time/part time lines, but I'm not sure I see that happening if they don't need us all. In the long run it'll be easier to send us packing. 10% cuts on top of what we've already cut is not a good sign. I don't think we've seen the end of reductions either.

Oh well. Nothing to do but sit down and watch the show. That's all that any of us can do. Wait.

Ever fly into BNA? If not, do not generalize every station as if we are Chicago. I can assure we get the job done. All of it. And Honestly, 9.00 an hour is crap pay, for a tough job. after a year you make 10.00 and if your lucky 10.50 after three years.

Oh by the way, I agree a lot of agents and rampers don't care. But to say we all do not, well its just slanderous. If I mis read your post I apologise... But I take pride in my work.

Oh yea, and one last thing, not all pilots are peaches and cream either.

It varies from location to location. Some I've been into have been super awesome and could turn the ATR in minutes - they worked hard and were happy to do it. Then I've been to others where we had to treat them like children and hold their hands - they couldn't turn a Cessna 152 in under an hour. So I personally could not generalize. I think its the luck of the draw. Same with gate agents. Same with pilots!

PS: Glad to see "Tommy" and his "digger toy" are still alive and well! I love that line.

LOL yea, its one of my favorites....

The guys was correct though... Alot of people just don't care, and that is horrible. Its bad for us, and bad for the company... I have noticed, at least at my station, the ones that do that are either the ones that have just started, and think the job is a joke, or the ones that have been there 15 years and say, "I busted my ass long enough, let the new guys handle it."

Oh well I gotta run, I have to find some food before I starve!

you're right...BNA has always been good...come to think of it probably one of the friendliest in the system...come to the northeast though and it's a complete 180...

no one is sure. i have been told that there will be a meeting on the 26th to discuss pilot staffing. talking to someone that just got back today from recurrent; they said they heard nothing out of the ordinary down in dallas. no talks of hiring, no talks of furlough.

the answer: i really do not think anyone knows.
