Knowing what some of the B concourse guys in DTW make, I'd bet many hotel van drivers make more.

Very presumptuous on your part, just because you do it everyone else has to. So what you do is always right, others are wrong, overly confident. Sounds like a millennial to me.

Is the notion that it is proper to do so, because everyone else has been doing it for a long time, insufficient? If yes, why is it insufficient?

I tip the van driver because they're working a job in the service industry with an established societal norm of tipping. That's why. There is no need for any further justification.

But I do have some ancillary reasons for doing so that not may not be a factor for everyone who tips. One is that I get enjoyment out of giving. I want to feel like I brightened someone's day. Another is that I want my company to have a positive relationship with the van drivers that carry our crews many times each day. And, finally, I've talked with a captain who himself worked as a van driver. He always tipped more than the standard $1/ride. His perspective was strong in forming my feelings on the subject.

I thought the millennial generation was the entitlement generation. So you're just picking out things you don't like and assigning millennial to them? Just goes to prove how unintelligent you are.

It's not what I do that is right. It's what everyone does, as a society. The society has deemed it respectful to tip a van driver who does a good job. We have also deemed it respectful to tip a waiter 20% when they do a good job. I don't have to tip them 20%. Or even 10%. But society has dictated that to me and, as such, I like to meet or exceed society's standards.

By the way, society has deemed it respectful to stand for the national anthem. Are you saying you think it's appropriate to buck that trend to?

I do hope you know almost 100% of restaurants tip share as a mandatory policy to reduce the overall labor cost for the company. ALL servers are required to be paid min wage*hours on duity. The $2.15 tossed around is to deduct taxes from, and the restaurant owners forced them to split tips to avoid having to pay out of pocket for the bad servers.
Your generous tip ensures the worst server at the restaurant gets paid from tips not the owner.

If you read the fine print in cabs it says they'll allowed to charge 50 cents for each piece of luggage they load, so a cab tip is on top of the charge.

I tip, but only because I feel I have a blessed life from God, not because society dictates I should.
Tipping culture originated from when only wealthy people traveled, or ate at fancy restaurants. Amazing how dress codes become non existent, but tipping never followed suit, like the money dance at a wedding is still around, but no ones lines up anymore to greet the bride and groom.

There’s a huge difference between a van driver and a waiter, which is the point of this. The waiter is slaving over you to get your food. With the van driver you are catching a ride on his route. Sure if they go out of their way to take you places you should tip because that is not his job, that’s turning him into your personal servant. You see the difference? Also if society dictated that it is proper on your 30th birthday to jump off a cliff would you meet or exceed that society’s standard?

That's a red herring argument. Use analogies to beneficial or benign societal practices, not malicious ones.

You go, social justice warriors bucking the trend of tipping van drivers and "breaking long-standing societal norms." You may even be able to add that to your resume.

Fight the good fight!

Someone please tell me...if someone doesn't tip why does it bother you so much? Why is this, awkwardly, such a polarizing topic?

Also someone a few posts ago complained about someone making assumptions...yet that's exactly what you people are doing when you form an opinion based on one detail.

In this thread I've been called selfish, cheap narcissistic, and been told sarcastically "gee I bet your fun to fly with."

Being called names doesn't bother me. I've been called worse things by better people than you. Just makes me feel bad for people that are that judgemental over something largely trivial.
