$5000 sign on bonus at Eagle
#32
I Jumpseat on Eagle quite a bit. The last Eagle captain I spoke with said that the company can't fill even 1/3 of its new hire classes. He himself was getting paid time and a half because of too few pilots at Eagle.

Also don't bet on getting the 5 grand. The union will rightfully fight that and if you were promised it I'm not sure management would say anything more than sorry Alpa screwed you now there's no 2 yr contract. I'm sure the taxes haven't been paid on it either so you'd only end up with 3 grand anyway.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is a signing bonus a bad thing? I'm glad to see that we now have 2 airlines that realize they need to do something to attract pilots.
We lament the first year pay every day, and now that an effort is made to increase the pay, some people think that's a bad thing?

Management should be spending that money by rewarding the pilots that are already employed at Eagle before spending it on outsiders.
If they really cared about raising the bar of first year FO pay they would negotiate higher payrates into the CBA and any bonus would reward those who stay longer as a retention bonus.
This is a bonus aimed at taking advantage of naivete, and with the forecasted shortage of qualified regional FOs every regional will be looking at ways to attract pilots. It's like advertising $199 a month to lease a Lexus, but when you read the details you put down $7500 for and the payment balloons to $450, and in the end you don't own a car.

Hiring is for attrition IMO, both current and expected. Even with likely losing the 21 emb135s next year we will have trouble staffing this airline. I suspect AA will officially announce recalls soon, which should pull another 100-150 off the top of Eagle next year (depends on the quality and timing of the APA contract which could be done soon). They have hired quite a few new check airmen in preparation of hiring, so the 400 number seems to be legit. Plenty of rumors about larger aircraft potential for us as well.
I don't know about the validity of rumors of nobody showing up, since today is the first newhire class, though 13 of 70 recalls came back iirc.

Because the pilots already on the seniority list not only aren't receiving the bonus, but they just took concessions.
