$5000 sign on bonus at Eagle
#41
Management should be spending that money by rewarding the pilots that are already employed at Eagle before spending it on outsiders.
If they really cared about raising the bar of first year FO pay they would negotiate higher payrates into the CBA and any bonus would reward those who stay longer as a retention bonus.
Re the second paragraph- from what I've read, Eagle claims to have too many of the people who have stayed longer. They wouldn't be giving them incentive to stay there.
It would be nice if everybody got an extra $5000, but why should the (presumably) senior guys fight against something that the junior pilots desperately need?

To those of you who think the sky is falling at eagle, take a moment and think this through... Why would the company be willing to spend $2million in signing bonuses for the 400 people they are trying to hire? If they furlough those people (and being on the bottom of the list they are MOST likely), they lose that investment plus training costs, etc. And those of you who oppose it are just jealous. I admit I am a little bit too, but at the same time its not like aviation is the only industry to do this. It is a good way to attract qualified people to a job. I would rather they do this than continue to only have 3 new hires per class and run the risk of downsizing the company because they arent ABLE to handle their current flying.
You should see this move as a good thing. Sure there is the whole "hire til we fire" mentality, but at least short term this is a good sign...

You raise a good point, but didn't eagle furlough quite a few people who had JUST completed their type ratings? My friend was one of them. IOE cancelled because he was furloughed.

I completely understand where you are coming from and I don't disagree. However, the purpose of the bonus is to attract new hires. It sounds like Eagle has a big problem with attrition right now. If Eagle can't successfully attract enough new-hires and staff their planes, everyone on the list could lose. Management could turn around and fix the attrition/pilot shortage problem by outsourcing flying to other carriers. I don't think Skywest is having too much trouble filling classes right now.

I've flown with a lot of the top 500 guys and most of them have applications out or say they will go to AA when called.

If they want to attract qualified candidates who want to work there, you do that by offering a complete competitive package to the pilot group as a whole. Not by throwing a bone to starry eyed guys who arent even on property yet. Have a good all around contract, pilots will come. Throw a one time bone, the smart ones stay away, the "i love management, they gave me a bonus, I'll take any job" types come and are just warm bodies to fill seats. Several other regionals, mine included, have been through this cycle before. Hiring bonuses only hurt the pilot group and negotiations as a whole. You have the company by the balls right now, and a signing bonus is the company's way of getting you by the balls.
