I don't think the short upgrade for guys that haven't been hired yet is over.

Heres why:

Only 2 of our (30) E175s are in service doing revenue flying.

Only 4 of our (10) new CRJ900s are in service doing revenue flying.

They wear 2 strips on their shoulders just the same as KLM and the rest.
I think anyone on this forum who instructed in Florida is probably familiar with many young former students of low ability who are now enjoying the right seat of an A320, 737 or E190 outside the US. Makes me wonder why I do this job. It doesn't matter if you know what you're doing anymore. Just turn on the autopilot and hope nothing goes wrong.

The Lufthansas, KLMs and Cathays of the world choose top performers through a highly competitive selection process, but that doesn't seem to be the case in most places.

DJ,

8-12 hours of flying , it's 3 pilots; 12-16 hours it's 4; after 16, I think it's a specific OpsSpec for the carrier and route. Duty time with 4 is max of 20, I think. FAR 117 may have changed it, somewhat.

Year 2: made almost 60k as a FO. Lots of open time
Year 3: upgraded at 26 months.
Year 4: Interviewed and hired at Northwest. In the pool. Delta didn't call.
Year 5: northwest and delta merged. Am I still in the pool? Delta didn't call
Year 6: delta flushed the northwest pool. They didn't call either.
Year 7: delta didn't call
Year 8: delta didn't call
Year 9: delta didn't call
Year 10: Delta didn't call. US Airways did though.

I spent a lot more time at Skywest than originally planned. It was a good company and the pay and work rules were above average. If no one called I would have been ok making a career of it there.

Would you be ok with making a career out of MESA?
I think its amusing the Regional (and some military!) pilots just ASSUME they're going to get hired at a major airline. Even if there is a huge hiring wave, there are PLENTY of qualified pilots around to fill the available jobs. Someone will always get left behind.

As the gent above indicated, you'd better be happy with your Regional. You may retire there.

According to APC, you currently have about 900 pilots, half of which are probably first officers. For growth ONLY, if you have an additional 26 airplanes coming, at a generous 6 crews per airplane, you'll only need another 200 captains. That means your fast upgrade captains are already on property.

Please stop using logic. Not good for recruiting efforts.

This. It doesn't matter how many planes have been delivered, it matters how many guys are on the list.

What base are these short upgrades at, IAD? What about CLT and PHX?

Only one of those is qualified for UPS, Fedex, and Southwest. When it comes to the regional game your best bet is to get in with the fastest movement, get your time, and get out.

Sure that works great when things are going smoothly but the majors have not hired since before 911 so how were we all supposed to get in and get out? The only thing we had were the contracts we were bound to!!
