Let's do an experiment, let's follow a pilot who gets hired at Mesa and a pilot who gets hired at SkyWest.

By Year Two...

Mr. Mesa upgrades. Until now, he's made $47,000 cumulatively (based on APC pay scales and minimum monthly guarantee).

Mr. SkyWest is a ways away from upgrading and has made a decent $55,164.

Year Five

Mr. Mesa has been a Captain three years and just got hired at Delta. Through now, he's made a cumulative $246,728 in five years. Not shabby.

Mr. SkyWest is now upgrading. In the last five years he has made $171,264. This is ~$75,000 lower than his Mesa counterpart through the same point.

Year Seven

Mr. Mesa is an FO at Delta on the A320. Through now, he's made $388,728. And he has two years of seniority at Delta.

Mr. SkyWest is also about to get hired on at Delta. He's two years behind his counterpart, and through now has made $313,464, $75,000 less.

Have you crunched the numbers?
I apologize, I'm not usually hostile.

But this is the most useless post I've ever read on the internet.

Comparing the theoretical future career earnings of two hypothetical people working at different regional airlines is impossible. It's made more impossible by the fact that you've thrown in the "hired at Delta" idea as something that is a function of simply flight time, rather than almost 100% networking.

I could sit here all day and run silly numbers about how working at Horizon will get you to Alaska with only 2,000 hours of 121 time, but in reality the only people who will get hired at Alaska/Delta/United/FedEx are the ones who realize that your logbook is probably the least critical part of your qualifications when it comes to securing a job at a Legacy carrier.

And to top it all off he's a CFI who hasn't even started at Mesa yet.

All the nay-sayers in every one of these threads always preaches "quick upgrade is an illusion."

And yet, people continue to do it at a number of regionals. When will it stop being "recruiter speak" and start being reality?

If you do your research you can hit that quick upgrade. Of course it will come to an end at some point but if you can read and have even the smallest bit of insight you can figure out where, and where not, to go.

This past decade has poisoned the mind of the regional pilot into thinking it will be bad no matter what.

Things can change.

This place(APC) is a breeding ground for negativity. Fact is there are plenty of happy regional pilots. Even at the "bad" ones.

What base has the most junior captains, IAD? What's the most junior captain in CLT and PHX currently?

A few months ago the naysayers were crowing about how Mesa had a 7 year upgrade and that a sub 2 year upgrade would never happen. Now that the 2 year upgrade is reality they are quick to point out that anyone hired today will be a long term FO even though the airplanes haven't even shown up yet. Sure eventually things will slow down but they are just getting started with hiring. Maybe in 6 months they'll be right but it's a bit early to be telling people they'll be stuck forever as an FO.

Impressive generalization.

You do realize that your beloved Eagle hired Tim Martins, don't you?

He's not at eagle bud! And Tim martins was/is indeed a con artist. The sad part is he is still flying and his rep still hasn't caught up to him...

Don't forget attrition hasn't picked up yet. Upgrade time could fall even more.

I agree that it can change. I was talking to a friend who is there now. He was doing the math and said that he should be on the "tail-end of the quick upgrades" based on growth. Once all the airplanes are on property, it'll most likely go back to 3-5 year upgrades due solely to the quantity of pilots that have already been hired in the past year. I'd say it is a safe bet to assume that if you aren't on property now or on property in the next few months, you will not get the upgrade once you get 1000 SIC.
