GUC is pretty special IMO.

DCA Mt Vernon Visual or ILS 1 circle 33. That's done every single day there.

I actually did that a couple of times on the B727, but it was always severe clear.

Dan Gryder and Scott Perdue (Flywire) did a joint video talking about this accident and circling in general. Dan has received demand letters from FSI Legal wanting him to take down his videos criticizing FSI, he shows one on screen. The other main Sim Training companies haven't contacted him.

The more of DG’s stuff I watch, the more I realize that (in my opinion), he’s a complete chucklehead who occasionally stumbles across a valid point.

Intimidation tactics. There's probably no legal basis... the email talks about "trademark infringement". So they're basically trying to assert that journalists and the media can never utter their name... yeah right

If they try to crush him with legal bills, he can probably cover that with gofundme.

The comments about FSI seem a bit over-the-top, I can see their concern. His experience with FSI is not my experience with FSI and circling approaches. There may be some gap in terms of mfr procedures and information, but airplanes of that class and era typically didn't get all that specific with the instrument maneuvers. The bigger picture is that there's a lot that can go wrong with circling approaches and there are reasons why these are not common in 121 operations. I'm not sure that's in FSI's court to address. It seems like it would be a good idea to have a bank angle/stall speed chart, but just having a chart doesn't make for awareness. Bootleg approaches/procedures appear to be the problem.

It’s a good term for it.

We used to call stuff like that “Bandit IFR.”

There is nothing “bootleg” or “bandit” about a circling approach. Skirting the “Procedure NA at Night” is “bootleg” and borderline stupid depending on the weather. KTEB has been bootlegging the 06, circle to 01 approach for years and, if TERPS was applied correctly, was never legal. What they did was “dead man walking”.
