"A malfunction caused the plane to nose dive and the canopy flew open – and neither man was wearing a seat belt, WRCB reported."

Malfunction?

Sounds like either spin training or an unintentional stall-into-spin with no seat belts on to me, and what caused the canopy to pop open was the student smashing up against it.

Just speculating...

Well, I can think of a couple things that would be worse than a couple experienced pilots not wearing their seat belts.

A few years ago in my area, there was a guy who bought an old Ercoupe , took a buddy for a joy ride, flew over the golf course and then did a 360 over his buddies house.

I don't know how hard he pulled in the turn, but he main spar broke (corrosion AD not complied with) and the wing snapped off. There were several witnesses on the golf course.

For you newbs, this is an Ercoupe: http://www.aircraftforsale.com/Aircr...2A-ad5322.html

Notice this add talks about the AD and corrosion proofing.

They got into an inverted spin perhaps. Right side up shouldn't throw you up against the canopy.

Unless maybe they were playing around, but I always tighten my seatbelt before I start playing, "Hey, watch this!"

Sure it can. When you break the spin by pushing forward abruptly to get maximum nose-down pitching moment. Not required on all aircraft, but some mistakenly think the rudder will always stop spins too.

Same deal with Bonanzas/T34As. The T34As were used by SkyWarriors out of Charlie Brown Field in Atlanta. I was a client in 92.

Sorry for my poor language earlier. I got carrier away with something that seems so preventable. I hope they find out why...

I always wear seatbelts in an airplane, it really seems odd to me that they wouldn't do it. I've flown helicopters, skydivers, freight, and 121, but I never thought of not putting my seatbelt on.
