Our SOP dictates that if you are not "stable" by 500 hundred feet in VMC conditions, the immediate call out is " go around flaps"!! Wonder if Asiana had a similiar procedure.

So, in a nutshell, some people would rather die than be embarrassed.

Never heard the old saying, "its better to die than look bad?"

Maybe they do, but would it matter?

Look at how many airlines that had ball ups/mishaps/just lucky it wasn't worse from unstable approaches (as defined by their procedures) and STILL managed to continue with bad results.

All that crap doesn't mean ANYTHING without some piloting skills and CRM in place.

Take a look at the SW speed/alt profile from the overrun in Burbank from years back as an example.

My personal favorite is "I'd rather be lucky than good"

But really, this whole scenario reflects back to the time when some mighty hard lessons were learned in the early days of the 727 introduction.

How many of you think the authorities should keep quiet to the media until all the findings are in?
I ask this because I work in the media and just a few months ago I decided to go for my PPL. Something I have wanted to do for over 20 years. Myself anytime there was an accident or crash. Whatever word you want to use. I never same with our network. Never used clips of eyewitness accounts or have so called experts on to talk about what happened. When I see or hear this in the media all it does it creates rumors and then "so called" experts talking out of their backsides.
I've called this many times "trial by media", which is very irresponsible. The reports I've seen on CNN International and Sky News just makes me sick. I'm very curious then as someone who works in radio and now going for my PPL. How many of you guys who have been flying for many years feel about it?

With the issues & bad press around the Dreamliner, it helps Boeing to have these things come out early. Politics my friend.

I think everyone onboard that airplane should pay a visit to the Boeing factory and shake everyone's hand on the assembly line and say thank you for saving my life.
Between the BA 777 at LHR and this one, that's a solid aircraft.

Sure it's annoying and it doesn't help public perception of pilots or the airlines, but fortunately [in the US] the media doesn't have a role in accident investigation, findings, or corrective regulatory action.

Anyone who's been flying for any length of time has watched the media repeatedly misinterpret most every relevant fact in an aircraft accident, and flight 214 is no different. I don't think the authorities should withhold information from the media, although based on the media's record of reporting facts I applaud the NTSB chairman speaking to them like they're 4 year olds.

Based on how they botch aviation reporting, how likely do you think it is that they botch every other non-aviation story they attempt?
