Quote: All of the examples you listed besides captain are governmentally issued, whether through the military or a accreditation board.
Quote: ...I now have a 757/767 type with no restrictions....When I make captain, it will be due to time. The title isn't merit based, therefore, it isn't "earned."
Using the previous posters reasoning, your type rating is issued and certified by the FAA. There are ways you could go outside your current employer and legally fly a 757/767 TODAY in the left seat. That makes you a Captain even though you can't hold the job on your current seniority list.

Quote: The uniform we wear is a costume and the "title" we have is also just for show. We arnt captains...This is just a job to collect a paycheck we're not saving lives or doing science. We have more in common with a fork lifet operator than a doctor.
With your attitude, you will ALWAYS be just a bus driver. Most of us understand that we have hundreds of peoples lives in our hands every leg while a Doctor only has one at a time.

You might be right though. You probably do have more in common with a fork lift driver. Your spelling and grammar are certainly congruent.

We'll I guess I'm going to nominate myself because, for the most part, I agree with Packrat. I am in no way endorsing blowing ones horn by demanding to be addressed as "Captain." But the position itself demands some respect.

My father is a retired (1969) Navy captain who has never tried to demand respect because of it. He has many retired navy friends that are the same way. Out of respect for them I will address them by sir or their rank. Not one them asks or demands it but, IMO, they certainly deserve that respect. Now someone who DOES demand being called by their military rank is a complete tool but I believe they do have that right. They did earn it.

These things were created by military pilots to make the transition better to civilian life in the 40s and 50s, the only title we have is "pilot". Some people need to check their egos at the door. This is just a job to collect a paycheck we're not saving lives or doing science. We have more in common with a fork lift operator than a doctor.
Gee, I always thought airline captains got their title because they were, well, captain of the ship.

Completely agree. You may disagree vehemently with George Bush or Barak Obama, but they both should be addressed as "Mr. President." Same goes for John Boehner or Nancy Pelosi. They're entitled to be addressed as "Mr. Speaker" or "Madam Speaker."

Its merely good manners.

Some people are Captains. Some are fork lift drivers. I guess its all in the level of pride and professionalism they exhibit.

You can usually tell the difference by the way they wear their uniform.

Tool runner up. Please find another career since you seem to hold your present one in such low regard. At a time when we need to be restoring our pay and working conditions, a "management" wannabe comes along.

Yes, you do have a type. But no, you are not a captain. Captain is a job title from a company and nothing more. In the eyes of the FAA, you are a pilot in command.

Quote: "Captain" is a job title at a company. You earn the right to be referred to it at work. It doesn't carry with you to outside life or another job, unless you have an ego problem.
I have a general aviation buddy that always calls me "Captain" in public. It makes me cringe. Despite the situation's awkwardness, he's such a nice guy, I've never asked that he stop doing it. The title is reserved for when I am wearing the uniform at work and only at work, unless it's a phone call from crew scheduling (which I wouldn't answer anyways) or maybe... if a fellow crew member sees their "Captain" on a layover and is shallow enough not to have remembered their name.

Insisting people call you that otherwise, puts you in the same category as this nozzle... What was he ever "Captain" of??!!!!

Well, he was the "Captain" of Toni's "little boat" until she furloughed him!
