This was just a few years ago and a relative of mine. When he hit 500 PIC he heard from everyone in about 60 days. I would also bet I have far more recent data on hiring at Delta than you do. Spend a week on a boat with someone doing interviews and you learn things.

Just a few years ago... "A few years ago" the majors were hiring high time FOs from the regionals. The whole industry was in a hiring scramble. The hiring climate is not the same today as it was "a few years ago".

Lol I've never heard someone refer to between 700-1000 sic and 1500 Cessna hours as a "high time FO" but yes the industry was nuts back then and anyone trying to move now should ignore those data points as it will likely cause more disappointment and frustration than actual career guidance.

I start training soon on the CRJ, looking to get either DEN or COS. I have heard that CRJ flying on the west coast is dying. Anyone have any insight if the CRJ will disappear completely from the west anytime soon? Is there still a DMA program for the CRJ out of DEN or is it all ERJ now?

When was your interview date AvgAirplaner? Are you going to a class date in February?

In DEN or COS the only west coast airport you'll see is LAX on a turn from SGU or PRC. One trip I flew had an odd mixed partner thing with an AA leg LAX-DEN but that just skipped a step. If you want to be on the coast the CRJ is the wrong airplane. Bases are small and not growing. Whether it will disappear completely is up to the mainline partners. CRJ flying in general is not getting any better and new destinations are mostly EAS. No CRJ DMA in DEN.

Feel free to pm me with questions. DEN based on the CRJ. Best of luck in training, study hard and don't fall behind.

Are any of those tiny CRJ bases like FAT and PSP closing anytime soon? It seems crazy to have bases with so few crews and routes. I’d imagine flying gets very repetitive out there.

They do it because those are maintenance bases, so they need to flow the planes in and out to get worked on, often on the night shift. So they'd be paying for hotels if they didn't have a base.

The Bro was pretty repetitive lol. But on the CRJ, you'd flow through other hubs and get a variety of flying. We even flew 700's at one point.

That was all a few years ago.

Like Rick said, they're maintenance bases. Junior for FOs, very senior for captains because they're all local. Pretty impossible to commute to but not a bad gig if you live there. FAT is mostly AA 700s flowing thru PHX from what I've heard. PSP is gonna be the same thing, first and last legs to a hub, hub turns in between with a couple 3 hr sits for good measure. Same in COS.

I've heard rumors they're downsizing FAT and PSP etc but they're just rumors. Not something to plan a move around. If you come here you're pretty safe planning for ORD or DTW, anything else is a roll of the dice.

This is not true for Denver. There are still trips that go through west coast cities on the CRJ. I am a DEN CA on the CRJ and had a trip with a PSP and SBP overnight with stops through SFO just 2 months ago. If you look at the February scheduling report for Denver CRJ we have trips that go through SEA, PDX, ACV, LAX, SFO, SBP, BUR, SNA, and SMF. I will admit though that the CRJ trips are not getting any better for the most part, passengers like the ERJ more so the more popular destinations will continue to go mostly to the ERJ.

Denver DMA went away on the CRJ after February of 2025 and is entirely gone on the CRJ on the United side (although there are rumors they may use it again some in the summer when the winds start to pick up). The only 2 CRJ DMA bases left are ORD and DFW and those are on the American side. Delta switched over to the ERJ for the winter, but if they decided to go back to the CRJ, LAX may come back.

United will be using the 200’s for a long time. They make a ton of money and there are rumors of a 30 seat 2 class configuration coming to them. It looks like they will also be converting all of the United 700’s to 550’s. They are already taking over a lot of routes in Denver as well. The CRJ will not be going away anytime soon.
