Good on you sir. You are smarter and wiser than I was my first year here! I've learned my lesson that hard way.

Interesting reactions. Pay what sort of dues? I have, both literally and figuratively. 11 aviation moves, and a regional (two actually) way
back when. I paid union dues. When corrected for inflation, my 3rd year turbo prop days paid about twice what the non union Skywest 1st year does today. I have commuted. With Skywest pay commuting is not viable. I have a house, you know, a life. That's why I want, and am enquiring about, SFO basing. Upping 1st year pay barely puts it into a viable range staying at home, not commuting. I am not advocating anyone voting for the first year pay increase without a significant pay increase for everyone else. But that's what a union is for, something it seems Skywest has repeatedly rejected.

Yeah sounds like you've paid your dues. And it would be great to fly with you and hear about it all. Honestly it does not sound like this operation is for you (based on previous posts). I hope you find gainful employment.

So how do you explain nearly every other regional that has a union and pays significantly less than SkyWest? We'll start with Republic and Mesa...
I'll take my answer off the air.

Unions are what you make them. I was in ALPA, and in a minor way active in it. ALPA, insofar as fairly representing everybody, is a POS pyramid scheme nowadays. But to say going union will degrade one to MESA/Republic levels is silly logic. They vote for what they negotiate. So would Skywest, with "better" pay and conditions, automatically negotiate something less than they already have?

Everyone wins, except you.
$24/hr for 75 hrs a month is no where near what most cfi's make.when i graduated college in 2012 i did a little tour of Florida and got about 35 different job offers flight instructing. a few were psying around 17 an hour most were about 26 an hour and a huge chunk was over 30 an hour. And you were busy. Well over 75 hrs a month. When i left my job flight instructing a year ago i was making over 60k a year. Had weekends off. Home every night, holidays off, made my own schedule, but i decided to leave cause i do eventually want to get to a legacy or lcc. But i didn't leave until i had over 2k hours because i was happy making the money i was and i saved a huge portion so i could still pay my bills while I'm "paying my dues."

Both of your examples are the outcome of CEOs who whipsawed their pilots. Both of those pilot groups traded pay and QOL in order to one list their pilot groups. They did what they had to and we should all applaud them for making the sacrifice. But you guys wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

I've had about 2 dozen friends leave SkyWest and they ALL say looking back on it they wish SkyWest had the balls for a union. There isn't consensus about ALPA effectiveness at the regionals and acknowledge the shortcomings but they ALL say knowing what they know now they would vote a union in today.
Ask your friends who have left guys. Add their info to your decision. We need to wake up! Now if only we had someone who could lead us....
