They never had to try to power out of the stall. That's what happens when you make your own holding speed at FL390 and then turn half bank off while in a turn.

Is it possible to make a short call reserve work when living 3 hours from base? I know its a 2 hour call out but does crew support actually call right at 2 hours or does the call typically come early? I've got options if I actually need to be in base to make short call work but I'd rather stay at home if its possible

My experience so far with short call is my calls have given me right at two hours for my report time once called. I wouldn't advise banking on a call out with a report time 3 hours after your call. Just based on my experience.
Last time they called me with less than 2 hours to report but told me if I'm not there in time not to sweat it but to show up ASAP.

On my last day if I have a 9-9 reserve could I still get called at 2030? or would it be unlikely and probably be ok to jump on the 2030 flight to commute back home?
Look at the list and see how many people are on their last day of reserve. If there are guys less senior to you or guys with first call yes more senior to you, you "may be safe".
Most guys who commute request early release on their last day of reserve. I've yet to be denied early release. Staffing is so fat they are good about releasing you if they still have adequate coverage. Usually they approve the request within a few minutes. Granted I've not requested it more than 2 hours out from my original release. Personally I'd request a release and get approved before you hop on a flight home. However if you talk to guys who've been here a while I noticed they know the game and are a lot more risky and would just go. To each, their own.

I've heard they've resorted to cold-calling people to see if anybody wants to take extra unpaid time off, they're so overstaffed.
Nope. The phone rang. I got put on a turn which arrived back in base after the last possible commute flight home.
In other words, never assume you can cut out early. If you get early release, great, but don't count on it...
Read the new rules carefully.
After 1900 on your last reserve day, you don't have to answer phone. If they attempt to notify of flying for your next reserve block, you just have to call them or self-notify within 24 hours.
After 1900, it's essentially "auto early release", they are not planning on using you, they just want to be able to notify of future flying (like an early show for a PM reserve).
The catch here is that you're only obligated to respond for any notification attempt between 1900 and your original duty off (2100 in your case). You're not obligated to respond to anything after 2100, so if you got a VM while non-reving home make sure you check the time it was left before you respond.
This doesn't help the 4-4 reserves, they still have to try for early release from CS.

On Day 5 of a 5 day reserve shift, which was 4a-4p, I was sitting in the jump of my commute flight home. It was 358 pm and we were due to push at 410 pm. Safe, right?

Your turn must have been quite short and there weren't any 9-9 reserves.
