True, although if you compare being a reserve CA earning min guarantee, commuting to reserve and paying for crash pad/hotels, versus being a senior line holder FO living in base and picking up trips at premium pay, the financial picture is pretty much a wash. Plus, reserve sucks so bad here. I could upgrade tomorrow but have zero interest in doing so until I can hold a line in my base.

If I was 23 and had no other commitments I'd probably feel differently though.

Yeah, that does sound like a tough spot to be in. How long will it take for you to get a line in your base?

Even commuting to reserve as a junior CA, I was taking home significantly more income. I was pretty surprised by the difference.

How soon can you hold SFO or LAX?

Just got off the phone with hiring, they told me 2 years for any transition (new hires or otherwise, Company need notwithstanding).
Apparently new hires were saying "I don't care which plane" then a year later "I didn't get to choose!"
Anyway, it's now 2 years now across the board.

I'm still going down the path with the E175, but two years more than a CRJ to upgrade and move on to a livable salary... lots of second guessing.

Depends on air frame. Pretty sure a lot of 175 guys are getting SFO initially.

Are they getting more desperate on the for Check Airman on the RJ or do you still have to be a buddy with someone?

You do realize that no matter what aircraft you get hired into you can take the upgrade on any aircraft as soon as your seniority allows it and you meet the minimums. Get hired into the 175 and upgrade on the CRJ no problem, or vice versa.

Another thing to keep in mind that these two year upgrades you read about are only happening back east. All of the bases Denver and west take years longer.

Ok, thanks, I didn't know that (able to upgrade as long as mins are met).
Though it sounds like it's a mute point, since that'll take more than 2 years.
Are there just more hours flown back East?

A lot of people traditionally came to Skywest to live in the western half of the country so most of those domicile are more senior than the east.
