They’re nuts then. We have never been more over staffed than we are right now. At the height of the Summer flying schedule and there is barely any open time in either seat, let alone premium. Hiring that many going into the Fall and Winter will be ugly not just for those of us already on property, but for new hires as well. I like to see new hires just like everyone else, but only when they are actually warranted.
Are they still touting to new hires that SWA has never furloughed?

Isnt hiring something you have to lead by a long time for any growth to happen? They have to over staff in the short term, so longer term growth doesn’t leave airplanes sitting. Hire a bunch of newbies, get the ETOPS training going, then ramp up the captain upgrades, then add more airplanes, routes, redeyes. Seems like a planning process to me, and a stack of new FOs is the cheapest and longest lead time part of the puzzle.

I’m a Captain and it has worked it’s way to the left seat as well. We are over staffed in both seats. That’s what I’m trying to say. This hiring is nothing more than changing Pilot behavior WRT the open time flying system. For every premium trip awarded there are at least three trips awarded at straight time in every base and every seat. We may be hiring for future grow, but there has been a fundamental change in manning that we’ve never had before. We are staffing a LCC like a Legacy carrier with one fleet type. That was never the business model WN was based on, and it devalues every Pilot’s earning potential both on property and future new hires as well.

I highly doubt we are changing our staffing principle. There will be roughly 50 more planes on property by the end of the year, Hawaii will require additional pilots/equipment. Has anyone been to the new training center? They didn’t spend that money to be over staffed. As pilots it’s always “me me me!!!” Take a step back, realize the airline isn’t here for you; you’re here for them and see what happens.
