Even if a flight departs empty, it could be diverted mid-flight to a new destination for a number of reasons, leaving the jumpseater high and dry, 100s of miles from where they thought they were going. I once departed SJC for PSP and got turned around to PDX. Reciprocity in an on-demand world isn’t really possible.

Default Destination 225 vs all the others

I just got accepted to Destination 225. I also applied to pretty much all the the other major carriers that have similar programs. But they are all very far behind and take forever to move you along in the process. SWA’s D225 was very straight forward and timely on all the steps. My concern is the high cost. I sat through a webinar on Alaskan’s Airs Ascend program which is half the cost and you don’t have to flight instruct with the flight school. After you have all your certifications, you can do any flying job you wish. I’m curious if anyone has any information on any of the other programs to share. Thanks in advance.

D225 is 100K working with CAE. I know JetBlue Gateway is about the same, maybe even a little more and I think they contract with CAE also, not sure about the others other than Alaska Air.

What flying jobs does the Ascend program say will be available to you with well under 1000 hours?

Congratulations!

The Alaska website says you do instruct at the school until you have enough hours to go to Horizon. One of the reasons Alaska’s program is cheaper is because of the stipends. I bet that requires you to remain in their program flying for Horizon for as long as Alaska needs you at Horizon. At D225 you pay your way but there’s no contractual requirement to stay at a partner or even come to SWA. I doubt there’s a faster path to a major than D225. And I know D225 is the only program with no strings attached.

No strings, and no guarantees. Good luck.

What do you mean by that? Once you interview and are accepted you have a pilot position at SWA. It’s your job to lose once you start.

This is correct. There is not an additional interview once the D225 candidate is ready to transition to SWA. I'm sure a thorough review the of the candidates training and employment file will be done, and assuming no major infractions they're good to go.

I am sure there will be a shortage at some point, and I’m pretty sure the regionals and smaller cargo operators are feeling it now. The way I see it is that the majors have a very large supply of qualified regional guys to choose from. It’s still awfully competitive to get on at a Legacy or Southwest.
And we are hiring guys with 60hrs of Seminole time.
