Interesting how they haven’t offered early retirements (yet). Also, does anyone have any doubt that another merger/acquisition is in SWA’s short-term future?

Wouldn't surprise me. Especially if you can grab an airline w different fleet type.

Said this on another thread, but imagine if Southwest and JetBlue joined at the hip, both with very strong balance sheets. Not that WN would want to part with the all Boeing model. But, B6's East Coast, Caribbean, Central and South America...oh and don't forget A321LR/XLR to Europe, and 70 A220-300's on the order book to help offset the MAX troubles. Combined with WN's network, East, Midwest, West Coast, and Hawaii. That combination would be the size of a Big 3 while also being a domestic powerhouse with a Long-Range narrow-body international future.

I think this is exactly what they do want to do.

All growth will be organic at SWA for the foreseeable future, feasting on the losses of other airlines. Recessions and now a depression is where SWA thrives. Its the place to be (if there is such a thing)

It’ll be interesting to see how the industry reshapes on the backside of this. I think most agree that the UAL, DAL, and AA will have the toughest time and most restructuring due to their heavy international/wide body/complex fleet exposure. AA already had the highest debt and lowest profit going into this. Will they be able to recover with roughly 40B of debt? Ch. 11 or 7? You could then mix and match 6 other airlines in mergers and acquisitions...that would be anybodies guess. That would leave roughly 5 or 6 airlines remaining. Not that far fetched. Southwest/Hawaiian....JetBlue/Alaska....Spirit/Frontier

I'm not a proponent of more mergers but I've thought for years that a combined B6 and WN would make for an absolute beast of carrier to contend with. The network structures would compliment each other incredibly well. We shall see, we're just along for the ride!

Apparently UAL conducted an employee town hall today. The rumor is (and this is unsubstantiated) that the plan is to furlough a minimum of 25% and maybe over 50% come 1 Oct.
Looks like the rumor was pretty accurate.

From the United section of APC:

5,007 Total
  • 4,476 Active (Line Pilots)
  • 40 Management Pilots
  • 251 Training Instructors
  • 240 Pilots on Long Term Absences
At least thats what was in the MEC email today.....

As of todays date, looks like 13,025 pilots on the seniority list.

Buffet just dumped all his his stock in Southwest. Has to make you wonder why he would sale at a loss if he believed SWA was positioned to grab market share.

I personally think they will wait this whole thing out and see if anyone folds. Then move in and take that market for themselves. If no one folds and everyone makes it through this, then yes I think they will pick off the cheapest carrier that fits the mold (NK or B6 would be my best guesses).

He dumped his holdings in the entire sector. He took a chance on airlines and is probably kicking himself for going against his earlier stance on them. They are terrible investment vehicles. For the time being, they will pay no dividend and will not buy back stock. If I owned an investment firm, I would dump them as well. Plenty of other places to make money in the market that will have a better probability of return.
As for selling them at a loss, that is the old sunk cost fallacy.

I am personally buying LUV, but that's only because I get a 10 percent discount and the casinos are closed right now.
