During my hiring process I got the distinct impression that the company aggressively screens for people who like to fly a lot. I haven't had any reason to change that conclusion since I've been here. As an aggregate, it "feels" like the predominant attitude in our pilot group is that flying is great, more flying is more great. Anything that takes away flying, even free money to go home and not fly, is not so great. When you institutionally select employees who really want to come to work significantly more than the minimum required, there's going to be a lot of inertia and resistance to backing off even for those of us who may have already met every single financial goal they'll ever have and who might be "happier" not working. We got where we are as a company on the basis of working just a bit more than necessary, because the payoff is substantial both personally and for the company. Tough sell to tell those same people it's ok to hang it up early and go home before they really have to.
Sure thing. I absolutely love flying. To the point that I fly outside of work for fun and charity. And if I were 60 and a topped out captain, I’d be gone so fast, they wouldn’t even get to finish saying “gone.”
I’m sure we can all agree that going to work during this pandemic has really sucked the fun out of it... how many of you have received calls from CP that you were exposed to COVID-19? I have.... 13 days after the exposure. The timing was spectacular, and I’m not the only one. Thankfully, no issues, but really got me thinking. Is this really necessary? Do I need this in my life? I do... but if I were 60 or over, would I?
Would I want to deal with the checkrides, commuting, medicals, COVID exposure, psycho passengers, cabin drama queens, and all that being that close to retirement and offered 191k per year to just leave and not even worry about it?
To each their own... I just hope something like this gets offered again when I turn 60 and am a topped out captain.

Exactly! I would think that every guy that has his life together would be flying out the door and every guy whose life is a mess would remain. I know it's a simplistic generalization with exceptions because everyone has a different story but I'm thinking it's true to a large extent.

Hope so! I have personally seen more than one who were not even considering stepping out....then considering the EXTO.....now leaning towards the VSP to guarantee that they get the award and do not get called back like the EXTO.

So am I reading the latest email from the company correctly, if you wait until the 15th to put in for the VSP you will get to see a pre award on the 21st and see how many people above or below you took the VSP as well and then you can decide to opt out by the 22nd! That kinda hoses everyone who put in early and now don’t have a chance to see how it will effect their seniority.

What does VSP have to do with whether or not to put in based on seniority?
