Captain at United on the 737 and A320 can be held at 12 bid periods with 165 days available on the line and 500hrs of United flying.
How long for middle of the country? IAH, ORD, DEN.

I wouldn’t commute for CA at any airline if my choice was a base on the left or right coast.

So here is a question: if opted in to Lance, how does one bid so as not to get awarded a Lance position in a base they don’t want as an FO?

Is this even an issue?

Im still quite a ways away, but want to know before it’s a negative surprise.

Glad to see Denver isn’t the most senior base anymore!

I think it's all in how you set up your contingency bids. There was a swapa video or podcast about it recently. If the lance threshold of that base was 13.6% of FOs and your contingency was set at 13%, you'd miss the cut. But if you set it at 14%, you may get in.

I’m not sure I follow you. As a fo senior enough to lance, if you don’t want to lance in a particular base, don’t bid that base. You will only be awarded a LC training spot if you meet the criteria for the base you are currently holding.

Because LC training slots and ability to keep the lance star are highly dependent on the desires of those senior to you, I see several FO’s opt out, then bid a Captain vacancy for one month to ensure control over their training month, and then bid back to FO in their preferred base.

If you aren’t based out west (for example) and you bid a fo vacancy in Oak with the intention of becoming a LC, you might be waiting several months for a training class in a base you don’t really want to be in.

We (FedEx) have the same sort of timeline, maybe a bit longer after bid award to training, but the real issue we're having is with our military guys who bid 757 Captain quickly not being able to meet the 1,000 SIC in 121 Operations rule. Even with the 500 hour military exemption, with our low block hours flown, it'll take them 1 1/2 - 2 years to get it.

Most junior United Denver captain on the 320 is about 5.5 years, not sure of the 737.

Had a recent captain tell me that if I have captain bids in all the bases and I’m opted in for Lance that it’s possible to be awarded Lance in a base I don’t want. This confused me because I thought that LC was tied to captain bids!

I have captain bids in followed by my current FO status and then my displacement preferences.

I don't think that's right because Lance is technically an FO bid position.
