35 vacancies + 13 august retirements = 48 upgrades?

OAK CA shows 0 vacancies and there are at least 2 august retirements from OAK to be backfilled.

Don't retirements create the vacancies?

I don’t think so. You can have movement with vacancies of 0 as long as the net change is 0. I think of vacancies as where they want growth. Look at how many upgraded into OAK in the last award when the vacancy was 0. They backfilled those who left.

maybe I’m looking at it wrong but that’s how I’ve come to understand it

Edit: 8 FOs upgraded into OAK when the August vacancy showed 0.

The last two new-hire classes have been small(er). Weren’t they shooting for 60 per class?

Maybe but this one doesn't even reach the bar they set for the 8/15 class much less the whole month.

From the forum

"They go by training slots and for the September Vacancy, 16 were needed for new instructors and a few for Lances that were pushed back from previous vacancies, so real Captain vacancies were reduced because of the lack of training available."

Probably not. There are a few bases that would be too good to pass up, but no crazy commutes to ETOPS bases for me this time. It’s all academic since 900+ people would have to bypass for it to get to my seniority again anyway.
