PHX is senior. LAS is doable, but not on a 6 mo seat lock. CA is out.

If I can’t hold LAS (non-Etops) I’ll hold out for DEN.

I’m a late 2015 hire. 1200 from most Jr with around 800 bypassing. No telling how things go with the DEN expansion next year…

2015 hire and living in base. Why anyone would commute to upgrade is beyond me. Better QOL and almost the same money if you pick up a few turns as a senior FO in base than commuting to sit reserve as a CA and holding sweet February vacations.

The biggest risk I see is going out on long term medical as a FO rather than as a CA.

I think a lot depends upon age and years remaining until retirement. Sick time and disability pays a lot more in the left seat in the event you need to go out on medical. If there is another merger (god forbid) it will be better to go into that integration in the left seat. And then there’s the possibility of another black swan event that grinds things to a halt - and you end up handcuffed to the right seat years longer than expected.

Thousands of us were furloughed when the retirement age changed from 60 to 65 overnight. Cost us god only knows how much money by delaying the recall by several years - so much so that a lot of us just moved on. Definitely want to be in the left seat if it goes to 67 or 70 so as to avoid another lost decade.

My son is a sophomore in high school though. Once he goes to high school, the commute - or even a relocation to a junior domicile - just doesn’t seem like as bad of a deal.

One pilots trash is another’s treasure. Once we are empty nesters those February and October vacations sound pretty good! Cheaper less crowded travel.

One thing is for certain, if those rumors of big time hiring and upgrades are even partially true, there will be a lot of people making their own pro/con lists and spending sleepless nights agonizing over what to do over the next couple of years.

"Different opinion"? Sarcasm and sniping, while popular on anonymous forums, are tactics used by keyboard warriors whose emotional arguments lack substance. By the (unprovoked) tone of your post, this topic clearly struck a nerve and appears you're sensitive to criticism of the current administration's handling of the pandemic. Fair enough, but If your aim is to credibly defend their actions, I might suggest using counter-points and justification based on facts/data instead of lazy, unresearched emotional attacks.

Free advice, take it or leave it, but the one area we can agree on is the need to return this thread to the OP. For the sake of my good friends at WN, I truly hope those upgrade times come down, I can't imagine jerking gear in the SW system for 10 years. FOs do EVERYTHING over there.

Peace.
That is good advice and I will take it.
Emotions don’t help.

My anger was fueled by a recent political rant that I suffered through in the cockpit. My strategy so far was to mainly ignore it. Well, its not working. When your partner does not acknowledge the fact that the current government was elected (just like the one before) there is no base for a fruitful discussion about facts. I will modify my strategy towards these unasked political rants in the cockpit.

Thanks again.
Peace.

Believe it or not, this idiocy happens from the other side of the cockpit AND the other side of the political spectrum as well. The only thing that stops it is single pilot ops. Looking forward to it.

Yep. Live less than an hour from the parking lot. 30ish flights a day to LAS and hotels are cheap, but won’t do it if I’m stuck for 6 mos. I’ve got no problem sitting plug on rsv at home.

Totally understand. It's going to be really interesting to see what kind of movement there is as people jockey for position ... or not.

I'll be curious to see how many they upgrade on the October and November bids with the next rounds of EXTO recalls.

Drink some bleach, keep those schools open and life is good.
If it was that simple we wouldn't have all countries around the world struggling to get a grip on it.

Back to upgrade times please.
I guess you either don’t have kids or work too much and don’t see the consequences that these power hungry governors have instilled upon them by keeping them at home. The long term effects on our nations children from being isolated far outweighs most other “problems” that the pandemic has created.
I was recently told by a CKAM that 5-7 year upgrades are what SWA is expecting soon to be the new datum.

2016 hire living within driving distance of OAK...I completely agree with you! I'll be happy to take the upgrade and hope to fly with you when you're making premium or DT ;-)
