They also take back the 5th advance from a vacation block or whatever pay from the company. That was a surprise.

If I REALLY want the work and think I'll get outbid if I bid POT, I'll bid straight to make sure I get the trip. Sorry not sorry.

It’s obvious I’m referring to a Captain on 12-year pay with 5 weeks of vacation—essentially a Captain in their 19th year.

If you’re out on disability and not returning within the same year, the timing of your vacation doesn’t affect QOL. In that case, you should focus on bidding for maximum monthly overlap. For example, in February 2026, the first week provides an excellent overlap period. Trading into that week would maximize your payout.

The 5th of the month we get an “advance” paycheck. When I went out on medical, I had a week of vacation and forgot that they would use earnings like vacation pay to “take back” their advance payment. Thought my 20th paycheck was way off when I got the explanation. Sadly.

I though that when out on medical, the pay changes to once a month, the 20th only .
