The primary driver of a new base is APL/pairing construction - geography doesn't isn't so much a factor. They will take a whole year of more efficient pairings and worry about 1-2 days of bad weather when it comes. At least with 3 bases in the area and many pilots they will be able to find many people to "help out" especially if they use the language where they can adjust the premium multiple.
Yeah we did the PM thing to ourselves. The 60 pg memo on how to set missed approach altitude is classic Air Force project pilots who don’t have a clue what they’re doing. Ask any RJ pilot how they did it or copy the manual from any other OAL to start with. Could’ve ended up where we are now years ago and with way less confusion.

They’re gonna open a base where they want without any pilot input so it is what it is. I’m just rooting for the place that has the most likelihood of unringing the displacement mess out West and AUS isn’t it.

SAN makes sense but operationally is a nightmare with 1 runway and delays associated with that. I think that’ll just be a mega station but would be a wildly popular base (for those who can afford to live there). Personally I hope it’s out of the running because I love SAN overnights. SMF would also make sense as a base maybe but they’d almost have to close OAK. Nobody likes OAK, even the people that live there. The only draw is that it’s in the Bay area.

If we’re serious about Europe stuff we’d prob need something in NE (or a bigger jet).

Also funny we didn’t have these issues 10 years ago.

My favorite SWA-ism is either putting a digital 6 pack on the PFD or removing auto throttles out of the classics cuz -200.

Agree that the memos from project pilots are often clueless - but they wouldn't be writing memos if we could stop shooting approaches in LVL CHG, figure out how to use the "big boy radar", and try to use aviobooks instead of mulishly using the pdf release.

We should have copied ATA's ETOPS stuff and American/Skywest procedures. (UAL/DL do weird stuff also).

I was jumpseating home and after the CA gave me the “you’re good, enjoy the flight”….I said…”wtf is that on your PFD?” They had a good laugh and no real good answer. Lol

I think it will be painful to implement, but much needed. We have issues. Ops day 2.0 shined a light on them. Don't be shocked when changes happen in response to events that could have ended the fun ride we are all enjoying.

If you haven't flown with "that guy" who will complain up a storm about this and have you carry them through CQT, just wait. They are the target audience even though they will never admit to it. They will blame the new hires.

I’m thinking there is some shared blame there. Two extremes, one from each of these camps, get paired, bake at 350 for 15 minutes, and out comes a steaming hot Ops day. Thankfully, I think we have seen a change in the absurd hiring spree and are back to competitive applicants. Next, we need to clean up “those guys/gals” which are widely known but nothing seems to happen with them.
