Had a guy fly a RNAV approach in level change recently.
this exact scenario was played during ops day. He had no idea till I said something he was in level change.
these callouts do not catch anything. No one looks at the FMA

oh he knew he went to level change. He just didn't change it back and was just watching the show.
I still have yet to see anyone reference the FMA. All still looking at the MCP

Exactly! We didn’t correct anything from the Ops day events. These callouts had a long time fan base that was able to push them through the window of opportunity. As you’re experiencing, they won’t do anything to help.
Good job being on top of things and preventing this guy’s attempt to make the news!

But you were the PM and caught it (presumably by looking at the FMA). The callouts aren’t designed to prevent errors, they’re designed to catch them. Should he have been verifying his selections on the fma as well? Sure, but the PF/PM system seems to have worked and that’s what we’re striving to improve on.

maybe if whoever is flying pushes an MCP button then that person should look at the FMA and see if it did what S/he thought it did?
That would be better than some pilots just repeating back what was pushed.
That's my point

I have been trying my level best to do the callouts like they are written. After 2 months of it, I mostly agree with the comments above. When things get busy, that’s the first thing I shed and go back to good old VVMI. Ever try getting a clearance with 3 things and doing it by the book? It takes a solid minute just to get the words out. Then you forget something and have to ask again and then do it over again. This does feel a whole lot like AirTran finally getting their last dig in.

Here’s a crazy idea. There’s two of us, both of us need to do a better job of doing and verifying. Hold each other accountable. We don’t need to say more things to make that happen (or not since the PE doesn’t do any PV apparently).
