Does your negotiating team hate new hires?

Yes and so do the 70% who voted for the new ta.

So these guys aren't hired then? Do they just show up for training unannounced?

We don't vote for or against a contract based upon guys at Republic, Mesa, Joe's Charter, or any other future pilots that may or may not come here. SPA members vote for themselves first and our fellow pilots second. The company is solely responsible for recruiting and that includes first year pay and benefits.

The pay obviously isn't too low otherwise we wouldn't have sufficient applicants to interview and to fill classes with. I'd love to hand guys $105/hour year one but I won't waste an ounce of my negotiating capital for guys/gals who aren't even on property yet.

Once the flow of applicants stops then NK can raise the first year pay accordingly.

$1700/month is disgusting for a new hire pilot these days. Even the regionals pay twice if not more than twice that.

Eating your young is the worst thing a group of unionists could do. It shows a lack of character in caring about new hires. News flash these guys are on property, they are new hires, not interviewees.

Or just lower the requirements, like they did last year? If you work for Spirit you should get the pay/insurance/representation.

Agreed but 70% of them voted for it.

See this is the issue. Spirit doesn’t care who they get. Meat in a seat. They will obviously take the best candidate they can get but if it comes down to money or lowering the qualifications, they will pick the later every time. That affects my day to day and Spirit should be a stage in someone’s career where they continue to pay dues (figuratively). I don’t want the guy next to me to have no experience and I don’t expect someone with experience to have to make poverty wages and have to decide whether they can afford to take their child to the doctor when they’re sick.

It’s on us as a union to do the right thing to make sure we have the best sitting next to us every day because Spirit doesn’t care. And when other options are available for qualified applicants, the best will go where they get a reasonable starting salary from day one and healthcare. Our training pay attracts those willing to accept less when currently others pay more. Do you want that guy to have a vote next round?

Whether you voted “For” or “against” the TA, new-hire pay was not even taken into consideration. Regardless of what anyone says, they don’t give a rats arse about some guy who they don’t know and doesn’t even work here yet.

I would never call out those 70% who voted yes. If I was at a Spirit I would've also voted yes.

The problem lies squarely with the negotiating committee who assigned little value to new hires. Just a dick move.

You’re right, we should pay what Delta pays new hires. Of course, those hotel room bills in South Florida during the winter will surely chip away at that paycheck...
