In your case the move you made was a gentlemanly action, but I think his poorly made point was the gate agent and her family should be grateful not pushy, and the captains involvement should have been limited to approving a jumpseat and verifying no other commuter needed it, not pressuring you.
this is the point. It doesn’t matter who you think you might be helping if you are unknowingly or knowingly taking the jumpseat from another pilot. You may have gotten a nonrev on by taking the jumpseat but a fellow off line pilot was at the bottom of that list and would’ve gotten the jumpseat if you hadn’t taken it. That goes for pos space and ronreving.

Thanks! I show as a S9 with a P next to my initials. There is another S9 but no P. I assume a FA?

How soon can I go to the airport and list for the jumpseat? Wife and kids are confirmed tickets on this flight but it is showing -8/182. I finish my day trip at about 4pm and then go home and get the family ready. Spirit flight is an 11pm redeye. Can I go to a random Spirit gate or checkin counter almost 6-7 hrs before departure when I finish my day trip and list for the jumpseat?

If it’s a FA, they will have “FA” in blue next to their name. I don’t think offline FA has the “FA” label. Just the Spirit FA. You can try to find a random agent working a different flight to check you in, and run you through CASS. However, they may ask you to wait for the one working the flight. I’ve never had this issue since our priority is based on when we list, so checking in early doesn’t make a difference. Honestly with oversold by 8, you might even get a seat in the back

You list online. Just check in at the gate when you show up.

I ended up doing that. They took volunteers because it was oversold. In the end 2 no showed and I got a middle seat in back. Worked out good!

Getting a middle seat in the back is far from what I would classify as good

He got a free ride.

And if he would have posted; “ugh, I got stuck in a middle seat in the back,” people would have roasted him with “don’t complain, it’s free”.

A free ride is a free ride.

No complaints at all! I’m a thin guy so I don’t have any complaints about leg space. Honestly the space was pretty decent. Wife and kids were in 21DEF and I got 23B so I was close to them. Only complaint was some of the fellow clientele openly yelling shush to the baby, even though wife was trying her best to keep her quiet. Never mind the fact one of those had his light on the whole damn redeye while the entire airplane was dark. There’s always someone. Wasn’t even a business guy doing laptop or reading. Just had it on.

Our return flight on Jan 5th has over 100 seats open for now, should be fine I think.

Give him a break. He probably didn't even know how to turn it off, thinking to himself the entire flight "Why the he|| they got this light on in my face?! Never flying Spirit again."

Back to Cali again. 183/182. What’s a S5 and S7, are these pilots?

Thanks!
