The same reason I fly with a ton of FOs from a particular “flow” regional. They want to move on when given the opportunity and don’t want to wait for their turn at the flow that may or may not happen if something goes wrong and that door slams shut. It doesn’t mean that they can’t still apply to the applicable legacy and get hired outside the flow (especially these days). Flows are not for the benefit of the pilot or to staff the parent legacy. The are for the benefit of the legacy to keep their regional feed staffed. Dangle the carrot so people want to work there. Flows are great for people with major skeletons who have no other shot at a legacy. Otherwise get out to wherever you can, whenever you can and keep a current app with the legacy of that’s your jam.

Did 6 years at one and the flow is a total joke. It also allows some questionable individuals to sneak by without a legacy interview.

A lot of regionals are going under before their junior pilots flow dates. They’ve lost so many CAs that they are already cutting back flights. Look at the bonuses being offered for DECs. For an FO to get upgrade eligible they need a CA in the seat next to them for 1000 hours. Every CA or senior FO they lose as an OTS hire breaks their “just in time” supply chain for butts in the left seat. Moreover, their competitors know that and are purposely recruiting those folks. It’s a collapsing system, and no amount of shoveling zero 121 time people in the bottom will fix it. Only a recession severe enough to stop legacy hiring might - and that’s a possibility.

picking a regional airline 101: don't choose a regional just because of flow.

Appreciate the responses. As always, there's usually much more to the catchy headline.

I have heard of Envoy captains accepting the flow to AA to collect their $75k bonus and immediately apply/get hired to United/Delta/FDX/UPS which makes me LOL.

Don't forget about the carrot that F9/NK dangle: upgrade time (haven't seen any of those in months)

From the "Fireside Chat with Spirit and Frontier", Barry says (paraphrasing) "Pilots only care about money and QOL. We have the money part covered. They would make the same money here as they would at Delta because we upgrade so much quicker".

Um....upgrade times used to be quicker....but not anymore. And even then you'd still make more money at DAL unless you only had 20 years left in your career. And don't mistake what he's saying there, "we have the money part covered." He's not saying they have the money to pay pilots, he's saying they're already paying pilots! "Our pilots make as much as Delta pilots". If anyone actually believes this, they deserve nothing more than what they have settled for.

Nobody believes this, not even the CEO that said it. What do you think he would say to investors “we have pilots leaving because of lower compensation at our airline”

I still haven’t figured out if Less Money, More Go is the title page of our contract.

The rhetoric of “we make just as much as mainline” was spouted to me just today by a captain. I bit my tongue. Now, whether he actually believes that or not….who knows.
