"From a pure cost standpoint, DTW would seem to be a good base to close. It's senior, so, if you can get senior guys to resign rather than commute, you lower your average pilot costs."

Nonsense, this company will base anyone, anywhere for non of the above for however long they want.

With that reasoning every time a company closes a base, do you think they are looking for pilots to quit instead of commuting?

I know more than a few senior guys that commute (CA and FO), because every company has a base and its never on your city.

It's part of our life. You know this man!

I was just told by the ORD station manager we have the complete floor downstairs to ourselves. We just got this a couple weeks ago. This is suppose to be turned shortly into several offices...

ORD will not be the new pilot base, it will be LAS! Only one new base is needed at this time.. ORD base will not come until late next year or Later or never, LAS base will come by the end of this year..

Las will start as a 50 crew base, 100 pilots! Most of they flying will come from FLL and DTW. ACY might not get touched.

This plan is being talked about and will be anouceced late next month or early Aug. Base may start in Sept but was told for sure by Nov.

All the west coast flying and new ORD flying can be shared by FLL, LAS and DTW.

FLL flying is getting cut due to airport terminal construction. These flights will come back to full force once FLL is completed and expect big expansion south once the construction is over.

50 crews...where in heck did you get that number! They haven't even run the numbers for LAS to see if it's going to work, let along set a particular target for # of crews.

I got it from the one of then persons running the numbers. The numbers are aprox.

Numbers being ran for ORD as well, but was told that west coast base was being considered first.

I guess we just have to wait and see.

Does Spirit have a lot of west coast commuters? I would imagine LAS going VERY junior...

There are a few west of Ole miss...But I think not enough to man 50 crews, so it may go a little jr.

Any idea how to update your resume at Spirit? I applied back in November and can only view my resume but not add to it. I would love a base out west.

This is off topic but, can someone please explain the whole "trip averaging" concept to me? I just want to know what kind of math they are doing to come up with these numbers considering the contract says we should be getting paid 4.5 hrs a day for multiple day trips min. Thanks!

Trip averaging is a crappy way of saying "not block or better per day". For example if you are scheduled to fly 5hrs on duty period 1, 3hrs on duty period 2, and 5hrs on duty period 3, but you only fly 4.5+3+4.5, you would think you get paid 14.5 hrs total, 5+(4.5min day)+5=14.5. Not the case. Spirit averages the block hours of the trip first, so you look at 13hrs block or 13.5hrs credit(for min day x 3).

If you are wondering about the red eyes recently, there are only 2 duty periods, so the min credit is only 9hrs. There was 4.5hrs of soft time in there because of a rest period in excess of 22hrs. The company has adjusted rest times with all the new flights to less than 22 hrs of rest, so no soft time in there to pad the time.
