I think they'd get more volunteers if they opened up flying reserve jobs to pilots who are already retirement eligible. Right now, that requires a high level waiver and is generally granted only for very undermanned specialties (like RPA). I suspect more than a handful of retired mil would welcome the chance to fly the T-6 for a few weeks every couple of months, just for fun. Not sure it would really help though, since permanent party IPs are crucial to student continuity and dramatically increasing part-time TR utilization could potentially crush student training continuity.
I’m fully expecting this EO will have very, very little influence on the airlines. The guys who I imagine will voluntarily accept a return either aren’t working or aren’t working in the airlines. It would be interesting to hear more details though.

And almost no influence on Spirit. How many Military guys do we even have? I've never met any in my 4 years. And why would I? Military guys get hired at Legacies. Anyone retiring from the military would laugh at our current contract.

That's not true, there are two Navy F-18 guys that I know of and one F-16 guy that I don't know personally.

I don’t know how much this would or would not affect the airlines but it wouldn’t be about the few military guys Spirit has. It would be about the mil guys the legacy airlines wouldn’t be hiring. That would give more opportunities to current Spirit pilots and boost attrition.

I was just saying it might increase legacy hiring... Increasing competition for pilots.

Thank you, but I’m hardly that.

USAF had 10-15 interested in the program, which is voluntary as of now, with 3 accepting positions. Not knowing the situations around those three, one can surmise that they have recently retired, probably out of a staff job with no currency in the previous three years, their options were limited in regards to Major airline flying and probably no desire to work for an airline.

Being as the program is voluntary and they’re looking for retirees who have retired within the last five years to fill rated staff positions (not flying and not receiving flying bonuses) I really don’t believe anyone would leave their legacy gig to go push paper for a year. Staff work is mind numbingly boring compared to flying and would amount to a pay cut for most guys. Until the USAF offers flying jobs (which won’t happen) or makes the recall mandatory (which probably won’t happen) I highly doubt this is going to have any appreciable effect on Spirit or any other airline.

Lobaeux,

Just curious, are you still with Spirit? I remember some time ago you had some interviews lined up.
