Bottom line: garbage pairings produce garbage lines under our current system or PBS. No reason to entertain PBS at all.

Agreed. Just to add, I think a good trip rig and duty rig is equally important. It would put pressure on building efficiency into trips. 1hr of pay per 3.5 hrs TAFB would be good. It's possible to have a 96hr 4day trip that pays only 22hrs even with 5.5 min day. However with the rig above that 96hr TAFB trip would be worth 27.4hrs.

I don't want PBS. But I most definitely want industry leading pay rates, while maximizing days off. I'll keep an open mind to whatever makes that possible.

You are correct. I don't like what I'm hearing (admittedly secondhand so it could be incorrect) that the company can pay only a few above industry average. The Union should not agree to that. We need to fix the slope of the pay scale, not make it worse! So in effect the company is saying:
The vast majority of pilots, those who are currently the furthest below industry average, can not get a small raise so that a small group of captains at the top of the pay scale, already closer to industry average, can get a huge raise.
The vast majority of pilots, those who are currently the furthest below industry average, can not get a small raise so that a small group of captains at the top of the pay scale, already closer to industry average, can get a huge raise.
If the payscale encourages a small majority of junior people to "move on" before they become senior people, then you get a huge labor discount by operating the airline at a significant juniority as compared to it's competition. This means more money for the most senior and mgmt. alike.

Why focus on pay rates alone? Pay rates are only one variable in the equation that = total compensation. I want job security, high yearly earnings, excellent insurance, a comfortable retirement, and great quality of life. Having the highest pay rates in the industry doesn't mean a thing if you don't have security and can't enjoy life.

Sure, I agree with all that. But I also don't want to have to 'game' the system and work on days off to get that total compensation to where the rest of the industry is.
