Peanuts has it right in that if you give it a parameter and it can't fill it, it ignores it. Transition conflict would be eliminated, and vacation dropping touching trips would go away. The company would never allow the union to run PBS. However the biggest problem with PBS is how we build pairings. We have so many 18 hour four day pairings. If you told PBS "I want max pay" it would build you 4 four day trips and a single day trip of four hours. ( 17 days working in a 30 day month ). You would get paid 76 hours. That's max pay. If you want to days off, it's not going to give you any free soft time. So it would build 4 four day trips (to 14 days off) at 72 hours. That's max days off. Yes, there are outlier trips for more credit, but not many. Remember when upgrade stops, 50% of the captains and 50% of the first officers will be on the bottom half of each list (duh, I know). They will hardly get anything they want, while the company enjoys massive staffing efficiency. in order to make PBS work for us we would need to ask for a six hour Min day, or min 15 days off per month. PBS is simply not good for the pilot group, and the company would never agree to any restrictions that would help us out. Even though I'm middle of the pack, I think it's a bad deal all around. I enjoy turning one week of vacation into almost 3 weeks.
The bottom 50% barely gets what they want with line bidding anyway. Our current line bidding blows (blasphemous to say, I know). Even if you're senior, good luck avoiding blocks of six days on, and if you want ALL weekends off, it ain't happening. But hey, transition is great for the top 25% and those four days off really help you recover from the six on you just did.

For the record, I have a buddy from AirTran that is holding ATL Captain at Southwest at aporox 17 yr seniority.

Yep, I'm perfectly happy flying 35 to 45 hours a month and getting paid for 90. I was planning on naming my new 38 foot Bertram either "SOFT TIME" or "TRANSITION CONFLICT". BTW you're gonna be a real busy guy the first week of next month

There was a captain at a regional that named his boat "extra tenth". Then he became a chief pilot and went after guys for dropping the brake early.

As far as PBS, if this company has control of the parameters of PBS get ready to take it so far up the ass you won't believe it. Any TA with PBS in it is an absolute no vote for me, I don't care how much money they throw at us, which probably isn't going to be that much anyway.

I was at the BOTTOM when I had FLICA PBS.....

I had commutable trips on both ends- and half weekends off.... I was able to PREF PLENTY of trips that had layovers in my home.... I was TOTALLY ok with it....

Now..... I WILL NOT take it FOR FREE!!!!

There is no way they will offer an hourly rate or retirement that will make PB worth while. Even if the pilots control it (will never happen) it will still be a living nightmare considering the routes we fly. PB is normally shoved down you're throat during chapter 11 anyway,.. We would be the stupidest pilots in ALPA history if we voted it in. I might consider it if they gave us a Delta or United contract but it will never happen because management thinks we are worthless pieces of sh**.

I did between 65 and 70% in my face and I usually get my first or second choice. You are correct though, in saying that the 4 days off ruins all weekends off for us. In my base there are predominately 4 day trips. Rarely do we work six in a row, although I know that's more common for other bases. I also got a 4+4 transition conflict last month. So it is possible to get one even as low as I am. I guess my point was with PBS the lines wouldn't get any better for most of us, but we would lose all transition conflict and vacation drops.
