A VDO is not considered under any of the rules for days on reserve. FAR 117 or contractual ability to be contacted. Meaning, like senior manning, they can ask you, cold, if you can make it to the airport in 2 hours. No FAR 117 rest, no long call pre rest requirements, or duty associated with short call. So, I might consider a VDO my option to work or not. I've never had a problem with turning down a VDO call with the crew desk.

It's an end around to all the rules, and pretty much the only way the crew desk can cover a trip on very short notice, particularly if they don't have a legal short call available.
Great explanation. Thanks!

Additionally to what Dave said....IF you convert days off to VDOs at the end of a RSV stretch, and you are still phone available on that RSV stretch, CS could give you an assignment that spilled into the VDO(s). I believe THAT is the intent of your quoted contract language. The key being "required to be phone available"... (on Reserve). If you do not convert VDOs until you are released from RSV OR better yet, only convert the days leading into RSV, you don't have to answer your phone, AND you can accept or reject any assignments cs has to offer. Just like SRM. "no thanks, but call me back if you have something with more MEAT"

I'm with you on not answering the phone...

I'm chewing on what you said. Thanks. Are you saying if a trip spills into VDO days, I'm not paid VDO on those days so designated as VDO?.
I'll dive into the contract to understand more. Thanks

If the days designated as VDO were RDO or FDO...you won't get paid any extra. Those days are moveable by scheduling anyways. You would get stuck with the spillover flying if they were VDOs or not.

It only makes sense putting VDOs in front of RSV blocks.

Why would this need to close?

What we gonna do with those jets and routes?

This is insanity. Can't the airline just publish a damn base and fleet plan immediately so the entire cadre of pilots who are currently on property can do some mulling over of options. Wouldn't it be great if people knew they needed to move, maybe they could do it over the summer while the kids were out of school?

Just saying........."unofficial word" Why can't the entire world get an official word?

There are no more routes for the 777 out of LAX all INTL has gone to the 787. Just HNL and a couple DOM. its like the 787 in IAH.....no more flying.

I agree with putting VDO's at the front of a work block.

I thought you received 50% add pay for the VDO only on the VDO day when its at the end of a work block. If the VDO was at the front end of a work block you would get 50% add pay for the entire trip even if is over RSA days.

I've never had the opportunity to be used on a VDO so I am only going by what I read in the contract and not from experience.
