What makes it his or her responsibility? They just fly the thing. Offering to take the jumpseat sets a precedent that I, for one, want no part of setting: the one that says that it's OK to continue doing this because DHing pilots will bail you out and use the jumpseat to un-fack the situation that your inadequate conflict resolution skills couldn't resolve. No thanks.

It's easy to say all this in hindsight. Overbooking and removing passengers from flights happen ALL THE TIME. It just never ended like this before, with all the camera phones rolling. You can't throw a deadheading crew on a Learjet every single time, that would cost a fortune. This was an unusual reaction from a long running standard practice. An article states the other 3 passengers deplaned without incident.
Sunday's event are going to make our jobs a lot harder. Especially for the flight attendants and gate agents.

Damn. I have pockets and hands, and own a gun. I'm a robber. Never knew that before, thanks for clearing this up. I'll be good and turn myself in BEFORE I rob a 7/11. That should make you feel better.

I like how some people on here seem to suggest this had to do with the regional, as if this couldn't have happened on a mainline flight. Clearly the aggressors were ORD based regional security/law enforcement...
Nice to know that some on here think so lowly of the regionals who do the exact same job for the exact same brand.

If you read the post I quoted he said the man was not a threat until he was told he needed to deplane. The point is you are not a threat until you are.

Do we know why the DH crew was late to the gate?
