I used to care when I flew SNB. I think the SNB lends itself well to doing slam dunks and short approaches.

If someone wants a 30 degree hack at it so be it.

I typically fly to S. America. No way am I accepting a visual approach down there. I don't want to be responsible for accepting my own traffic separation. I'll let ATC earn their peso's, or whatever.
Maybe you misunderstood my comment. It was not when is it appropriate to fly a visual vs instrument approach. It's was a if you're cleared visual (assumed appropriate) on downwind or a 5 mi base, are you comfortable doing it? I'm talking of a small minority but something I'm not used to seeing.

I agree, their leg, their jet. Btw, don't knock the WBs. They lend themselves to short approaches and slam dunks as well.

i thought i read that you cannot apply outside of AVIATE if you work for one of the 4 UAX carriers. also why would you give up the opportunity to get to the interview?

If you have checkride failures, should you even bother applying to Aviate? They were single engine add-on to Commercial and CFI. I now work in a crew environment for a 135 passenger operator.

Thanks!

Yes apply... Numerous people hired recently had checkride failures in their past (me included). Was never asked about it but always be prepared to discuss what you learned from it and never place blame.

Additionally, there are pilots I run into quite often from one particular regional that embody that entitled attitude. These attitudes seriously hurt your flow through argument case.
Why don’t you ask some of those guys what they’ve had to put up with for the last 15-20 years while the majority of airlines were not hiring, being on reserve at a regional level for 5 plus years while having a family with min days off and barely making 80k a year. I hate it when you guys talk behind someones back while you’ve been buying your boats and cars and stuffing your 401k. I don’t care where you’ve come from but I’m 100% sure you are now disconnected from reality and ignorant to the regional industry.

Not at all. My first regional job paid 12K/yr. Then when I upgraded it shot up to 18K. 10 years later it just eclipsed 55K with massive amounts of hustle on my part. And the best part? Ten years after I got hired at UA, I wasn't even making 85K while on airbus reserve while under Tilton's wet dream contract.

To me, the reality of the regional industry is that you guys are now making a hell of a more then we did when we were there, particularly Captains. You're also flying better, safer equipment and to more (and better) cities. And you got a hell of a windfall after 9-11. Yes, regional pay and working conditions suck. None of us want to do that again. But you're likely to find very few of us who are willing to give up a thing to airline management ever again. And if that means Scope relief for you or The Chief Troll on the other thread, that's too bad.

Perspective.

Shaft,

Lebron must be high at the moment because he's killing it for me. My wife thinks we cut the cable, stopped college savings, 401k contributions, ate mac and cheese, and essentially stopped spending money altogether because we were trying to save our Morris Justine, two Porsches, and our $5000/mo mortgage. If she finds out I took a 48% pay cut, lost my pension, had my benefits and work rules gutted, lost 10+ years of seniority, she'll divorce me.

Clearly, LeBron is not a student of the last decade.

Yeah please keep patting yourself on the back with all your hard sacrifices, while looking down on regional guys as a bunch of unqualified rejects. I’m sure the relationship between us will only grow stronger.

Never heard from the Big 6. The CPP gave me a chance to get in front of the people who do the hiring. The rest was up to me, but just GETTING the interview can be harder than you think. Unless you have military flight time, you can’t count on your phone ringing. Accumulating hours at the regional won’t be enough.
Back to your original question........maybe they won’t look at you negatively, but they might ask. What are you going to tell them your reason was for not applying? Do you think that answer is going to sway them one way or another?
My airline has been absolutely hemorrhaging Captains recently and the Aviate program is, among other things, a retention tool. I've been at my regional for 13 months and I expect that United and the express carriers will meter their pilots taken from the program so that the average is 5+ years of service at the regional. Even that might turn out to be low. I dont want a cjo and the expectations to be held over my head for 4+ more years. Seems like a part of the ADM acronym PAVE that would best be mitigated.
